Saints give due diligence to supplemental draft prospect Adonis Alexander
The Virginia Tech cornerback has serious playmaking ability
The 2018 NBA Draft opens up tonight, and the 2018 NHL Draft drops tomorrow to carry us through the weekend. More importantly, the 2018 NFL Supplemental Draft is less than three weeks away, with teams scheduled to make their bids on July 11. The supplemental draft process is a little different from typical annual selections: teams work in a format comparable to silent auctions, offering future draft picks in exchange for any of the handful of prospects.
So if the New Orleans Saints like any of them enough to pick another rookie, they’d have to sacrifice a 2019 draft pick to make it happen. That’s a tall ask given they’re already shorthanded after the Marcus Davenport trade. For reference, the three supplemental draft-eligible prospects are:
CB Adonis Alexander, Virginia Tech Hokies
CB Sam Beal, Western Michigan Broncos
S Brandon Bryant, Mississippi State Bulldogs
It’s interesting that there’s so much activity surrounding this year’s supplemental draft prospects. No team has drafted a player through the supplemental route since the then-St. Louis Rams picked Clemson Tigers offensive tackle Isaiah Battle in 2015; Battle spent two years on the Rams’ practice squad before joining the Kansas City Chiefs, who traded him to the Seattle Seahawks.
The other most-recent supplemental draft pick? Cleveland Browns superstar receiver Josh Gordon went pro in 2012, but his notorious off-field issues have often reduced him to an afterthought. I’m not trying to drag either Battle or Gordon, but their stories do illustrate why the supplemental draft carries more risk for teams.
DraftAnalyst.com’s Tony Pauline reported earlier this week that VT cornerback Adonis Alexander worked out for 26 teams at his individual pro day, meeting privately afterwards with four clubs including the Saints.
Alexander’s pro day workout results were something of a mixed bag: he nailed the height/weight/length measurements (standing 6-foot-2, 195-pounds with 32-inch arms) and explosive testing, posting broad and vertical jumps that would have ranked among the best in the draft class. However, his 40-yard dash time left a lot to be desired (4.61-seconds) and his agility drills (short shuttle and three-cone) were outperformed by some linebackers.
On tape, Alexander looks the part of a big, playmaking defensive back who excels at competing at the catch point and swatting away errant passes (boasting 7 interceptions and 17 other pass deflections in his career). He’s not afraid to mix it up at the line of scrimmage in run support, with 4.5 tackles for loss to his credit. However, his lapses in focus and lack of recovery speed will be problems at the next level.
Unfortunately, Alexander appears to have some issues consistent with supplemental draft prospects. He’s had a couple of off-field incidents in his VT career and is only available in this process because he was ruled academically ineligible to compete as a senior. Members of the VT athletic department characterize him as a “knucklehead” to independent scouts.
So will the Saints select Alexander? It’s too soon to say, though they’re obviously interested. Considering they spent the 2018 offseason restocking the defensive backs room (adding Kurt Coleman, Patrick Robinson, Natrell Jamerson, and Kamrin Moore) and their lack of draft capital in 2019, I’d be surprised if they made any kind of strong bid for Alexander’s services.
Lastly, here’s my analysis for the supplemental rounds of the WWE Draft in which each pick will be describe in three sentences or less. There’s also a chance they may not be described at all. Well, with that, here we go with the supplemental picks that were only revealed on the WWE Network last night:
RAW selects The Golden Truth (Goldust & R-Truth): An okay pick with lots of experience between these two. Let’s see if they’ll have enough firepower to become Tag-Team Champions.
SmackDown selects the Usos (Jimmy Uso & Jey Uso): Kind of surprised that this team was selected so late. So much potential these two have that can be fulfilled once again
RAW selects Titus O’Neil: Good pick by RAW and possibly a good way to get back at Rusev for those embarrassing losses.
SmackDown selects Demon Kane: Another good pick. I’m just hoping to see if he has what it takes to be one of the best again.
RAW selects Paige: Kind of surprised she went so low in the draft. Her stock has dropped dramatically since November. One can only hope that she’ll be able to redeem herself.
RAW selects Darren Young with Bob Backlund: Nice pick by RAW. Let’s see if he can land the IC Title on Sunday to Monday Nights.
SmackDown selects Kalisto: He’s ready to make a name for himself as he did earlier this year when he became the United States Champion.
RAW selects Sin Cara: Let’s see if this version of Sin Cara will be able to top it as a singles competitor like the original did during the brand extension era in 2010.
SmackDown selects Naomi: About time for her to be selected. One of the most forgotten female wrestlers today who is ready to make a huge statement on Tuesday nights.
RAW selects Jack Swagger: Nice pick by RAW as Swagger aims to get a resurgence in his career as well.
SmackDown selects The Ascension (Konnor & Viktor): To be honest, I thought they were going to RAW until I learned that from this round forward six picks would be made for the remaining rounds. Gotta see if this team can be original and not a rip-off of the LOD or Demolition.
RAW selects The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray Dudley and Devon Dudley): Back in 2002, both went to separate shows in one of the most shocking draft picks in WWE history. Now, both are staying together.
SmackDown selects Zack Ryder: Nice pick by SmackDown to select someone who is on the resurgence of a career after being stalled for the past four years.
RAW selects Summer Rae: Someone with full potential ready to wow herself on Monday Nights.
SmackDown selects Apollo Crews: Huge shock to me as he was selected so low when I was expecting him to be a top 10 pick. I’m only hoping that he’ll do better now that he’s on one show and not two.
RAW selects Mark Henry: Another veteran who also experienced the Draft before. Let’s see if he has what it takes to gear up with the younger guys in the ring
SmackDown selects Alexa Bliss: Haven’t seen much of her in the ring but expect her to be that center of attention.
RAW selects Braun Strowman: The Wyatt Family is no more with this pick. With Braun now out on his own, expect a lot of potential to be unleashed.
SmackDown selects Breezango (Tyler Breeze and Fandango): Good pick by SmackDown as they bring class by selecting Breezango
RAW selects Bo Dallas: And The Social Outcasts have been split. Expect to see the resurgence of the “Bolieve” campaign.
SmackDown selects Eva Marie: Another polarizing figure in professional wrestling. Wonder if this was a good move by SmackDown to select someone with so little talent.
RAW selects The Shining Stars (Primo and Epico): The re-surging team is selected by Monday Night RAW and I personally can’t wait to see them reignite themselves in the tag-team division.
SmackDown selects The Vaudevillains (Simon Gotch & Aiden English): Took a while for the former NXT Champions to be off the board. Full of potential that can be unleashed on SmackDown.
RAW selects Alicia Fox: Haven’t seen much of her for the past year but it’s great to have her back and see her on Monday Nights.
SmackDown selects Erick Rowan: Looks like The Wyatt Family may stay intact, 2/3rds of it that is. A strongman with little words but lots of potential to be unleashed on SmackDown.
RAW selects Dana Brooke: A long wait for Dana as she was selected in the final round. One of the best female wrestlers who is underrated and should’ve been picked higher.
SmackDown selects Mojo Rawley: Hold the phone because I call this the sleeper pick of the entire draft. Didn’t expect him to be drafted at all but it’s good to see the Hype Bros team up in the near future.
RAW selects Curtis Axel: Looks like Axel is also heading for a resurgence in his WWE career effectively ending the Social Outcasts. Look for him and Dallas to team up on occasion while at the same time work on their solo careers.
SmackDown selects Carmella: The last pick goes to a someone who is very athletic and has lots of potential. It’s just sad that she will not be reuniting with Enzo and Big Cass but what move as she is the final pick.
And with that, there is the full analysis of this year’s WWE Draft. Let us hope this will be done yearly show that we can shake everything up like we did in the past. Stay tuned for a final analysis which I will have either tomorrow or Friday on this year’s WWE Draft. Also, stay tuned for announcements of the broadcast team as well as the fate of the undrafted wrestlers.
