A number of fanfiction authors are pulling their fics from Ao3 because people are illegally selling bound copies of these fics on etsy.

Pretty sure this hasn't happened to any of my stories. And I have given permission to folks to bind copies for personal use, which is perfectly legal and just and this post does not apply to those situations.

But this needs to be said:

If you are the kind of person who would download something from Ao3....bind it....and sell it on Etsy...you're dead to me.

The fact that people have the balls to take creative works that aren't theirs, that are provided for free to the world because of the joy it brings authors to share their stories with people who love the characters as much as we do, and turn around and sell them for HUNDREDS of dollars is gross and morally corrupt.

And the people who buy these copies, knowing they are putting the entire world of fanfic at risk, are just as bad.

It is ILLEGAL to sell fanfiction. It is immoral to buy it.

Fanfic exists in a liminal space where writers are protected because no money exchanges hands. The greed of a few is going to fuck it up for the rest of us. If you see bound fics for sale, please report the sellers.

This may be my first post but!

Heyyy so of course ao3 is down but! At least I read the update of the fanfic I was reading before it went downhill, also I gotta say- I appreciate the team working their best effort trying to fix or solve the issue whenever ao3 is down.

Remember, folks: now is the perfect time to work on your WIPs or brainstorm new ones! DM your besties and talk fic plots and lore, hold writing sprints in your Discord servers, draw some snakes in baskets on that art tablet you keep meaning to install and practice with more! Assholes wanna be dumb and attack our archive, we'll just create even more stories and art to post when the archive is back up and running.

And AO3 absolutely will be back. These guys aren't the protagonists in a bad 90s movie. They're whiny idiots trying to burn down the library because they don't like all the available genres. AO3's librarians are armed and fighting back.

In light of all the appreciation posts I’ve seen for ao3 writers and the INCREDIBLE volunteers behind the website, I would like to remind y’all that you don’t have to wait for donation season.

They accept donations year-round and those of us who have the money to spare should go do that right now.

Under Siege

There was no reason to attack, but it didn’t stop them. Some said they rode under a false flag, but it mattered not to those of us that suffered the onslaught. The reality was the same no matter who led them; the community was under siege, and there was nothing we could do to stop it. The hours passed like molasses, one bleeding into another as we waited anxious for news that the invaders had been repelled. As the day came to a close, we went to bed with heavy hearts, to sleep, to dream of a better tomorrow where AO3 was back online.

If I spam Audrey Richards with hate mail, that's committing harassment.

If I turn up at Audrey Richards house, THAT'S committing harassment.

If I tell other people not to vote for her due to her affiliation with the Republican party--a group that openly courts the votes of racists and neo-nazis and are systematically trying to dismantle systems designed to protect queer people...THAT IS NOT HARASSMENT.

The OTW needs to stop pumping out the same "both sides" bullshit that's got us into the position of small groups of awful people being able to dictate laws all over this country and protect the people who use the platform.
