Influential albums in my life #29. This album was released domestically in the mid 90s. It’s French rap. All in French. It was the first #hiphop I’d ever heard in another language and it blew my head. Gorgeous album. After this album I frantically searched out as much foreign language rap as possible. I eventually heard rap from Ireland, Brazil, Mexico, Germany etc. I found out about other French groups like #SupremeNTM, Sleo, Menelik, Les Sage Poets De La Rue and the film #LaHaine. If #Gangstarr is my main influence in beats and scratching then #MCSolaar and Producer / DJ Jimmy Jay is second. Super deep boom bap jazz cuts and sharp turntable skills. #DJPremier and Jimmy Jay former my sensibilities on what a scratch is supposed to sound like years before the #turntablist movement. For reference the sound fits somewhere between Gangstarr’s Daily Operation and Pete Rock and CL Smooth’s Mecca and the Soul Brother. The samples are gorgeous ranging from Bonnie and Clyde by #SergeGainsbourg to Blues and the Abstract Truth by Oliver Nelson and so forth. When I was I france in 2003 myself Andy crew got to meet the head of the Hi and Fly label who at that moment were reissuing material by The Afro Lafayette Rock Band. He used to hang with Solaar and Motorbass. I told him how much I loved Solaar and he recommended I not tell any French hip hop heads, the underground considered him a sell out, haha.
