On this day, 2nd January 1907,  a young Charles Kingsford-Smith was rescued from the surf at Bondi Beach.

On 2 January 1907 lifesavers on Bondi Beach rescued 9 year old Charles Kingsford Smith, (then simply known as Charles Smith) along with his cousin Rupert Swallow. The two boys had been caught in a rip and were being pulled away from the shore. The boys panicked, struggling to stay afloat in the surf. It was a near brush with death for Charles, as he was unconscious when bought in to shore, but he recovered after resuscitation. 

A newspaper article in Trove reads “ The surf bathers at Bondi had another exciting experience on Wednesday afternoon,when two lads-Rupert Swallow, a resident of Darlinghurst, and Charles Smith, living at McMahon’s Point-narrowly escaped losing their lives. About 3 o'clock a number of people on the beach noticed that the boys, both of whom were about nine years old, had been carried out by the undertow, and that they were unable to make any headway towards the beach. The alarm was given,and immediately many willing hands were ready to grasp the lifeline and go to the assistance of the struggling boys. James McLeod and William Burns of Waverley succeeded in bringing Swallow into safety, while James McCarthy of Darlington and Warwick Wilee of Croydon rescued Smith. When brought to the shore Smith was in a bad way, having lost consciousness; but Nurse Sweeney of Quirindi, who happened to be on the scene, applied restorative measures,and shortly after both lads were able to return to their homes.”

Ironically Charles Kingsford Smith did end up dying in the ocean when, in 1935, his plane crashed into the sea somewhere off the coast of Burma.

The surf life saving reel had only just been invented and demonstrated at Bondi in December 1906. See image above.

Rescue drama off Bulli beach this evening

A search for a reported missing person in the surf off Bulli was called-off this when darkness set-in tonight

A SEARCH for a possible person in the water off Bulli Beach, near ‘The Pines’, off  Ocean Park soccer fields, was called-off when darkness fell today.

This evening Surf Lifesaving Illawarra was notified of reports of a possible person about 120 metres off shore.
