With all of the hype surrounding the latest touchscreen apps for iPad and iOS users, you would think that Android wouldn’t be far behind them. But they are miles away. The problem is not within the field of app development, since there are plenty of talented programmers who could do a few good things for Google – the problem is that Google has not created an environment where any of this is possible. So for now, the iOS will enjoy its position as the top dog for music apps. While devices like the Microsoft Surface promise tablet technology at desktop speeds – there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to make it play nice with other bits of hardware out there. So far, some nifty changes have been made that allow a MIDI controller or MIDI controlled device to mimic what the tablet is seeing on screen. It might not actually sound like much, since the equivalent of this is already available for iOS users, but it shows that there is definite interesting into making Windows RT usable for musicians.
