I woke up the other morning and immediately was sent on an emotional rollercoaster. Big Crown Records was releasing another Holy Hive (Brooklyn, New York) album! Holy Hive was no more!

I'll focus on the positive. Paul Spring and Homer Steinweiss have created another gem of folk-soul or whatever you want to call it. And we've been lucky enough to get four releases of beautifully crafted music.

I'd be remiss if I didn't name-drop similar artists: Me and My Friends, Surprise Chef, and Aaron Frazer.

Surprise Chef :: All News Is Good News

Australia’s Surprise Chef dish out heaps of heady grooves. The instrumental quartet first issued their debut album, All News Is Good News, in late 2019 as a blink and you’ll miss it pressing on their own College of Knowledge imprint. Copies sold out within a week, but thankfully the good folks at Mr. Bongo have done us all a solid, making it available for the wider world to hear.

Recently discovered Surprise Chef and picked up their latest. They are like a lost KPM album. Jazz-funk-movie themes type stuff.

Okay, now this is ridiculous. It’s July, 2021 and I’m only now just publishing my 2020 year end mix. But, come one, it was 2020. Everything was all kinds of effed up - cut me some slack!

I don’t have to say how bad my year was. Everyone’s year was bad. Let’s all just pretend it didn’t happen (like the high percentage of you who are not getting vaccinated) and listen to some great music.

Surprise Chef - All News Is Good News - laid-back instrumental soul from Melbourne

All News Is Good News is the debut LP from Melbourne instrumental soul band Surprise Chef. Recorded live to tape over a handful of sessions in the band’s home studio in Melbourne’s inner-northern suburb of Coburg, it traverses the group’s unconventional jazz-funk sound; journeying through cinematic shades of light and dark, tension and release. Whilst the band comprises of four key members, All News Is Good News features multiple guest instrumentalists on bass flute, vibraphone, saxophone, congas and assorted percussion, creating vivid, textural landscapes within the journey of the album. The album is the first full-length release of the College Of Knowledge Records imprint, following the label’s three 7” releases from Melbourne left- field funk/soul bands Surprise Chef, Karate Boogaloo and The Pro-Teens. does anyone remember that australian reality show, a cooking show where the chef would go around shopping centres and look in people’s trolleys and then offer to go home with them and cook them something using whatever they had in their trolley and whatever they’ve got in their pantry and fridge? 

i miss that show so much - it was incredible!
