some comments under an unrelated discussion about edit channels, and im really surprised that no one is really talking about this weird, pervasive undertone of this discussion that famous streamer is entitled to that monetization at all. maybe reddit it just where the diehards are but I can tell you from live chats and youtube comments that the median reaction to 'hey, isn't this guy a millionaire?' is universally poor. theres been some little things ive picked up on recently.
if you would like to continue to read this really long winded, unstructured ramble about jerma985, the cut is below. i guess the only thing most immune to cis white gamer backlash is a cis white gamer, that must be the only explanation why there wasn't a long angry reddit thread about this. So I'm doing it.
when a lot of the best fan-made edits came out, they were in periods where jerma was either inaccessible from his clips channel or completely off the grid in general ~2024. a huge wave of fans came in (myself included) and those videos were their first sites of community. Jerma Clips was a really good channel that I thought got taken down by a bot claim, but this is making me requestion it.
So, critically, I notice that cheltie doesn't/won't/can't outright say *why* jerma is looking to demonetize other clip channels.
Funny story. Jerma made some comments back when nintendo first started putting old games on their paid service/cracking down on emulators that were often the only way you could play an old game. whether or not he understood what the main argument of that whole debacle was, i doubt he did. he is kind of stupid.
now that I mention it, isn't it the same kind of childlike stupidity that only men are permitted to?
Well I suppose that's always been there without me being upset by it before. There's that too.
But continuinig
i dont know how you could argue how Nintendo isn't justified for taking down an ungodly amount of hard, volunteer work by fans, but argue that jerma is. taking down piracy sites does not divert revenue into the copyright holders pockets. nowadays it seems less like the arguments to preserve copyright has little to do with lost revenue, since that's been debunked. but that it's increasingly a popular opinion, now for the same fucking genre of guy that came up with a streamer supercruise, that the only people who can draw the limits of "IP" are the copyright holders themselves. Its just a tool that allows them to do whatever the hell they want.
he other night i watched him stream diablo 2 and literally watched 500-600 subs roll in. He said there was a sale to 'celebrate the new sub emotes', he said that a few times
Now. I've watched probably 2000 hours of this guy saying shit. And I'm telling you. I doubt he like. Came up with any part of that idea. Or even that sentence. The way he said it, the way it barely occured to him to mention on stream (only after the subs started pouring in). It doesn't bother me that he didn't come up with the idea, but just he's just .. so brazenly and lazily taking credit. I remember feeling a little confused by it at the time.
These streams are funny don't get me wrong, but that doesn't mean they're like, really low effort commentary these days. Just kinda the same low-grade douche energy as his shitty streamer friends (sorry vinesauce I kind of mean you too). Those stilted moments stand out
it also bothers me that he doesn't frequently mention that his girlfriend made the custom emotes. he showed on stream the prototypes she had for just one of them, it was like 12 wips for ONE emote. ONE. And there's like a dozen out and dozens more still to come out. and she made animated pixel gif of their cat too, etc.. if his friend vinny or ster made an emote would he mention that more frequently?
on the whole I've noted and enjoyed the contrast of the calmer, idgaf energy these days to his more frazzled and anxious energy these past several years. sometimes the first thing I'll do after I catch a live is watch an old edit of a 2018 stream. It's neat. Its my enrichment activity.
It seemed like the calm came from years of dealing with chronic pain, which is relatable. But the past month or two I see it more like a little, like, becoming a parody of a washed up streamer. Which he pokes fun at, but like .... He can get 500 subs just by mentioning a couple people's usernames. Man. Like. I sat there, watching that. Went like 'damn'
i also can't help but notice that his (now ex) was more frequently mentioned back then too. it's not in my place to guess what either of their wishes are on being public/private, but I'll tell you, you can often find holly (current gf) appearing in chat just as frequently as the moderators do
I uninstalled twitch a couple days ago. I correctly guessed it would piss me off if I watched him more.
You know what bugs me the most tho? I hung out in offline chat. A lot these past several weeks, theyve kind of replaced where my old online friend group used to be
none of us were close but it was a reliable forum. Very reliably knew I could open it up in line at the supermarket and talk to another trans person there and talk about being trans or whatever without fear of being harassed (jerma and his mods have been strictly zero-tolerance on transphobia in chat since like 2021 iirc). but like I also talked about growing tomatoes and maybe meet up in a fanmeet? I just can't get behind how he's acting. Which is nothing new, I guess. It just feels very ironic that for the first time in years, hes streaming, , and for the first time, I get to interact w ppl live, while I happened to have a lot of free time
conclusion? I don't know
Streamers acting entitled to other people's channel money is nothing new. It just didn't line up with the Jerma reality in my head where he acts humble or makes fun of himself and promises people you don't have to subscribe, but he's always been stupid and centrist and hold a crypto wallet. im not here to justify that. I'm kind of just writing this for myself.
Im stealing oomfs (I don't actually know if she's following me on this account. Hi emily) tags for this one. yeah i think as a society it's time to stop watching northernlion & jerma
