In my story a girl in her mid-twenties has been in the military (army to be specific;would it be easier given the following for her to be a low or high ranking general or a soldier?)for years, and has a little sister.Would she be able to leave the military if her sister needed her(parents died)?Would she be able to rejoin the military after a couple years when things settle down? What would be a reason for her to do so?And after rejoining the military, would she live on a base or in her own home?
I think having her be enlisted would probably be easier, as the army’s a little stricter with commissioned soldiers. If her sister is a minor and they have literally no other available family members, she can definitely apply for a hardship/dependent discharge due to the fact that she is the only guardian the minor can conceivably have. Alternatively she can take the sister on as a dependent without leaving the military, but she would be eligible for deployment unless she could pull some strings and she would have to continue to fulfill a complete work day, so there’s always that danger. After a few years, she can reenlist as her previous rank, (which after a few years of enlistment is probably either E-4 specialist or e-5 sergeant, unless she’s REALLY high speed) as long as she’s prepared to go through basic training again, she’s within physical weight and strength standards, and she hasn’t developed any medical issues that would disqualify her. She would also obviously have to start in a new unit. What would be the reason? Idk. She’s your character. Why would she want to go back into the army?
As long as she’s got a dependent and/or is at least an E-5 or an officer, then yes she can live in her own place, and no it does not necessarily have to be on post. On post housing does exist, but there’s often waiting lists for it and it’s often easier to just get a place off post.
