Surya Rug Company has become one of the most dynamic and trend leading manufacturers in the area rug business and to many the name Surya may seem like a new upstart that sprung onto the scene in recent years. However, the journey of Surya has been a tad more tedious and longer than most people realize. Likewise, we love a good family based entrepreneurial story and so we thought it would be great to share some of that with you on one of our top suppliers, Surya Rug Company.
Surya currently has its United States headquarters based in White Georgia on a modern campus of office and design space accompanied by an impressive 1 million square foot warehouse. But Surya wasn’t always a leader in area rug and home décor, in fact their story starts much smaller and many miles away in rural northern India. In 1976, Surya Tiwari ( the company’s namesake ) had an impromptu meeting with an area rug buyer from a major retailer located in the United States. That chance meeting led to Mr. Tiwari forming Surya as a small wholesaler of hand knotted rugs. As that relationship prospered, Tiwari recognized the void that was missing in the area rug business and set out to broaden Surya’s footprint in the United States. So in 1986 Tiwari took a big step and set up a permanent division half the world away in the US.
Fast forward some 20 years and Satya ( Tiwari’s son ) continues the journey as President of Surya Rug Co. Satya was no less ambitious than his father and soon took it upon himself to lead up Surya and broaden their selection beyond its initial core competency of Area Rugs. Under Satya, Surya has becoming a dominant player in the home décor industry offering Area Rugs, Lighting, Pillows, Art & Accent Furniture. Surya continues to invest in talented people who combined with massive advancements in weaving technologies further establish the brand as a well respected name in area rug manufacturing.
The Surya story is an impressive one and undoubtedly will continue, as they show no signs of slowing down.
