Back to work

Okay, so two days of relaxation had quickly turned into five days, and five days had turned into a week. Thomas Awbrey had needed the break, though - the time needed to clear his head had been a necessity, but now he was back, and ready to get back at it.

As he had taken a break, Thomas didn't expect his employees to run the place full time. If they had wanted, they were also allotted breaks, and Thomas was pretty sure the pub had been closed entirely for a day. He had made the calls, though, and everything was ready.

Everything was good - Thomas hadn't quite come to terms with the horror he had seen, but he had managed to block it from his memory. Still, it was early, he was sober (for now), and he was ready to get started, which is why when the door opened and signalled a person's arrival, he grinned widely.

slow night

Ysolde leaned against the countertop, sighing. There was a disparaging number of customers at the Anchor's Weight. None of them particularly interesting. 

She waited until she spotted someone with whom she could talk, she was bored, "Hullo," she said with a small smile. "What brings you here tonight? More importantly, what's keeping everyone else away?"

I'm exhausted.

It's strange how easily I get tired these days.

Circus, huh?

Thomas paused, stopping at the stoplight to look at the flyer that (very brightly and colorfully) read "CIRCUS." He snorted a little, perusing it nonetheless. He had never been, but the very idea of being stuffed in a tent with hundreds of other people sounded like a nightmare to him. So caught up in his thoughts, he didn't notice the person coming up behind him.

It must have been surprising for any person to notice that a large wooden circle was moving in their direction. Painted red and white, the circle didn’t seem to see that the person was standing there, and continued moving towards them. Only until it was quite a lot closer was it finally recognized as a man carrying what looked like a giant dartboard, and not as a walking circle.

The sun was beating down on August’s shoulders with an intensity that was unusual for so late in the afternoon. It would have been so much easier for him to just roll the board to the tent, but Theodore was extremely strict about not getting grass stains its edges.

It was a great relief to the man when he finally spotted the person, for it gave him an excuse to set down the board for a while.

“Hello. I see you’ve made it to our little corner of town,” he said, the corners of his eyes crinkling as a bright smile came upon his face.

setting up a spectacle

Being observant, while also being sneaky, in most languages would fit the description of spying. It was also, however, conditional. Therefore on the conditions of that afternoon, it was simply watching. 

As it was, in down-town Beaumaris, they had started setting up the tents for the multitudes of acts that would soon come to life. Those who swallowed fire, those who walked on air like some walked on earth; they would soon fill the colourful tents, and so would eyes that matched Ysolde's, filled with wonder. 

The machinery created noises that contrasted with the beauty of the unmade circus, and the air was not yet that of popcorn and light, the atmosphere was instead borne of anticipation. 

Ysolde looked around, she saw no one but workers just yet.

The night off

It's sure been a long week, Inspector Owena Ashe thought as she sat down with a heavy sigh. Bottled water in one hand and a file in the other, she made herself comfortable before beginning to read the contents of the file. True, there was nothing new in it, but she didn't feel right not doing at leastsomething since the Valentine's dance. She hadn't been there, but Owena was determined to pull every scrap of information she could from the witness statements and crime scene reports.

She looked up in irritation when she thought she heard her name, eyebrows raising at the approaching figure.

later laments

After her long and trying session with Dona Goodwin, Ysolde insisted that she would walk home. She didn't care if it was safe or not, the chill of the night would fix her. Ysolde was determined not to fall into the dependency-inducing pleasure of a nice drink. The anti-freeze to free her icy blood. She passed the Anchor's Weight without even glancing at it, although she was sure Mr. Awbrey would be needing help. Not everyone was so willed as she. She continued her walk, uninterrupted yet.
