The concept of sustainable living
Sustainability is about meeting our needs today without jeopardizing the needs of future generations. And the concept of sustainable living aims at ensuring good quality social living conditions without harming anyone and without depleting the functions of ecosystems. Sustainable living means maintaining a lifestyle that reducing the use of Earth's natural resources by an individual or society.
Sustainable living is closely linked with sustainable development. In the 1980s, the UN published a report named - Our common future, where it was stated that sustainable development is "a development that satisfies today's needs without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to satisfy their needs".
The concept of sustainable living and sustainable development is based on the three components - ecological, social and economic sustainability. These three components interact and support each other.
In September 2015, most countries of the world decided on 17 global goals for economic, social and environmental sustainable development. They also agreed to work towards it together. The goals intend to end extreme poverty, to fight disparity and unfairness, to endorse peace and justice and to solve the climate crisis. The problems the world faces today are closely related. A transition to a more sustainable society will solve many problems.
In December 2015, a new global climate agreement was signed by world leaders in Paris. They decided to work for global warming and to bring it below two degrees and limit it to 1.5 degrees. It was agreed that the target should increase gradually and that industrialized countries must offer sufficient support to all the developing countries.
The concept of sustainable living became popular after these two events. Top five ways to ensure sustainable living are using less water, consuming fewer products overall, recycling everything that is possible, purchasing more Eco-friendly goods and reducing energy use.
