Packing for one year in Mexico.
Currently, I am sitting at McCarren Aiport waiting for my flight to Mexico City. As of now, I will be blogging about my experiences working, studying, and living in Mexico City as a Fulbright Binational Business Grantee. I fortunately made it to the airport in one piece, and I got lucky and passed through the baggage check-in without having to pay any fees. (I was 18 pounds/8 kilos over O___O LOL and I just saved $64). Packing for a year in another country has probably been my most nightmarish packing experience for the reason that I had to pack as many clothes as possible and all my essentials. Now you may be wondering, "Why doesn't she just buy clothes there?" I have a very valid reason for packing about 80% of my closet. Clothes in Mexico are expensive, surprisingly. Also, I am going to be working, so I had to bring all my business outfits. Additionally electronics are extremely expensive there and the tax is pretty high as well. So all my gadgets came along with me as well. I spent a week cleaning my room and sorting through all the crap I accumulated through college. I'm pretty sure I threw out about 5 trees worth of papers. However, I have spent the last two days packing. Sorting through clothes, accessories, toiletries, shoes, electronics, and more so that I could move into my new apartment once I find one and settle in. I rolled all my lightweight clothes and laid out pants, sweaters, and jackets. I have become a master of packing, stuffing stuff into every crevice of the suitcase I could find. I should've started earlier.
When packing for a temporary move, you absolutely have to make a list. Your medications, electronics, clothes, some snacks you know you can't get in the country, shoes, and if you're a girl, tampons. Anything you can buy such as shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, etc, leave at home and buy in the country you are moving to. Anything you know you can't get and you absolutely need, bring it. Anything else, buy over there.
But most importantly, have your passport and some money for exchange on you. I always do a double check before I leave for the airport. Wish me luck, and hopefully I make it to my hostel tonight without dislocating my shoulder from the heaviness of my backpack. HAHA
Let's go on an adventure.
