well, my first band (if you don't count my classic rock cover band from high school) soulcracker moved to los angeles only to break up almost immediately. my l.a. band ragsy has now gone diaspora - our main drummer first moved to nashville with his much more successful band, then our main singer moved to austin, and now i find myself in sydney, having pursued an australian girl who happens to have borne me beautiful, identical twin girls turning two in about a month.
i'm in glebe, which is kind of a hippy college area, in a tiny room in a boarding house run by an italian from argentina named victor with a brother who plays guitar in silverlake. victor plays the hammond organ as a hobby, and loves to talk about music, and shows he's seen with his brother at a club in l.a. which i can only assume is genghis cohen, based on his description.
i've been playing in newtown at a club called the sando. newtown seems to be the east end of hollywood of sydney - it's nice and seedy in a way that makes me feel comfortable. the sando, though, probably won't be around much longer. it's a big story in sydney right now. the commonwealth bank reappraised the property and tripled the rent, and barring a dramatic turnaround in the ninth inning will be sold to developers to turn into apartments.
i'm not really here to perform anyway, though. i'm just trying out material that i'm working on, finding out how well it sings and whatnot. the truth is i don't have the faintest idea what i'm doing here. i'm legally barred from working until i get my visa sorted, so in the interim i'm just trying to write. write write write. so far i have a lot of beginnings, and no satisfactory endings, though as i do complete new songs i plan on posting them here and on youtube. i'll also be posting a lot of adorable photos and videos of my little girls, carmen and vivienne, so that one day they can be mad at me for giving their childhoods to the gods of the internet.
