Catcalling

Okay so in the light of the CNN interview I just saw on Tumblr (it's probably months old, sorry), about the one day in NYC video: please understand that catcalling and 'compliments' are not always compliments. Hitting on women after they tell you to quit is not a compliment. I was hit on by two guys who looked at least 40 when I was 17. They grabbed my arm and kept on talking to me, they told me I was lying, that I wasn't 17, I had to be 18 (the legal age of consent here). They didn't believe me and stopped me when I tried leaving. If my friends hadn't been there to help me and pull me away, I would've been absolutely terrified.

These things happen. Almost all women experience it someday.

A little something

Y'know, I don't often post things about myself, but I'd like to post this.

For a long time, I was a tomboy. I was fine with that, and I liked it. But slowly as I grew older, I wanted to try on dresses and skirts too, but I never did. Why? Because I was too afraid of what people would say. I thought that I was known as the tomboy, so I couldn't 'just' become 'girly'. My friends tried for a long time (probably years) to get me to adjust my style to what I liked. And it took a long time, but they finally convinced me that I wasn't suddenly 'changing', if I changed my dressing style to what I liked. It wasn't 'not-me', because it was what I liked.

A while ago I bought my first skirt, and terrified, wore it to a family birthday. And I loved it, No-one really stared, I mean, sure, they were surprised, but they didn't mention it (apart from small compliments now and then), and that was what I was afraid of. Now I wear it more often, and am slowly becoming more comfortable in it.

I thought I couldn't be girly, because I was a tomboy. I do self-defence sport, and I watch horror, and that's not girly, I am not girly. But guess what? I can come to self defence in a skirt and kick just as much ass as when I arrive in jeans.

It took me a long time to accept it, but being girly doesn't exclude being a badass. So thank you guys for helping me accept my own style and pushing me to do what I wanted to do all along.
