Suzie Bubble and Caroline Issa chatting before the Tome show
I feel like taking a lot of inspiration from Asian aesthetics lately.
The 2005 inaugural cover of Vogue China by Patrick Demarchelier is stunning: a blonde Gemma does not jar among all those beautiful ladies. The harmony of this photo is great.
Then the typical stereotype, Japanese and cameras and a beautiful lady riding away on her bike.
Suzy Bubble, as the true queen she is, is captured by the god Tommy Ton while doing what she can do best. Can we talk about that shiny black bunny? And the casual elbow-pose?
Then, Melvin Chua, one of the most inspiring fashion personalities, the chancellor of the gates of China for fashion brands. Here with Albert Elbaz and Giambattista Valli.
Today everyone wants to bring China to Western Fashion Weeks — to initiate in reverse the process that Chua has pioneered a while ago, of selling Western concept of luxury to the East. What Chua does is not only to shape their brand strategy for introducing themselves to China, but also to make that introduction himself through the full panoply of brand shaping: events, partnerships, people, installations, images and aesthetics. A translator of codes at the highest level. This unique role puts Chua at the leading edge of the future Chinese economy. Fashion is probably the only news brought to China that seems far to pose almost no risk of creating trouble within the country. This is not because fashion is outside of political dynamics, but it is a charming tool used by the government to educate Chinese purchasers. They are educating them to the "appealing decadence of buying beautiful things" and big fashion brands are seen as important allies. Chua is their matchmaker with the West. Not exactly a little role.
