I’ve just re read the Marble Hornets comics and I wanted to give so thoughts.
One thing that is really interesting to me is the fact that Jessica (and others) now see the visual tearing and glitches as real life hallucinations. A scene that this particularly stands of me is the ending of issue 4 with Amy. Her face distorts in a similar way to how the footage did in Marble Hornets.
Further more, I have lots of thoughts regarding the Operator’s correlation with (for lack of a better term) facial blindness. Jessica says that after Rosswood, she began having issues with recognizing faces. This, combined with how Alex somehow mistook the man in the tunnel for Jay (despite seeing his face) leads me to believe that this may be one of the less documented symptoms of the slender sickness. Despite how relevant it seems to the comics.
As someone with facial blindness, when I look away from someone for even a moment I have absolutely no memory of their appearance other than a smear of color and collection of shapes (if I’m lucky.) Usually upon seeing someone again, I’ll recognize them. But if they say for example changed their hair, it’s not likely I would know who they are. If I go for long periods of time without seeing someone it becomes even more difficult. Now imagine all that, along with frequent memory loss.
This gets me thinking of the masks so many of the most infected tend to wear. Skully, Masky, Hoody. All easily recognizable. While Tim and Masky are almost entirely different people, Brian and Hoody seem to be (at least for the most part) the same person. For Tim the mask may be a way of separating his two identities. But for Brian it feels much more like a way for him to recognize himself through a haze of depersonalization.
As we begin to see Adam follow down a similar path to Alex I start to also see some reoccurring archetypes in the ‘cycle.’ Listed below.
The host - The origin and source of the virus. (Tim, Jessica)
The transmitter - The way in which the virus spreads. (Jay, Taylor)
The aggressor - The virus causes them to act aggressively towards their peers. Often to the point of extreme violence. Usually causes the start of the new cycle (Alex, Adam)
The Operator - Self explanatory
