@svmmercmance:
She swats his hand offering her a cigarette away. Rather irritated. It was a matter of time when Ester’s calm demeanor would run out on Alex. She was patient and doting, rooting for him until the end. Yes, until he has proven his championship the second time. Though, the last months a wall she has put between them upon realizing future with Alex was going NOWHERE. She still rooted and congratulated and celebrated. ❛ You got what you wanted. Congratulations. You are a champion. AGAIN. ❜ Voice dipped in venom, once lovestruck gaze lacking the spark. ❛ And now what? What are you gonna do now? Do you know how to do something else than racing? ❜ Ester can’t deny her infuriation towards the sport. It has been the center of Alex’s world for so long, it once awoke jealousy and now just hatred. ❛ For a while I thought the accident messed with your head or something. Like, seriously. Like, your emotions. And I get it. It was horrible. ❜ She shakes head lightly. ❛ But like, what did you do for your future? You’re gonna be old and the sport leaves you. The fans, too. Someone younger and better comes around. And you have money, sure, people like you for that. Don’t be surprised if they like you only for money. ❜ More bitter words could follow, but she puts a stop to her monologue, believing it will just fly past him.
The sudden seriousness of her tone cuts through the haze of intoxication that has descended over him during the night’s celebrations, starting from the first sip of the victor’s champagne on the podium earlier. Of all the people, he’d expected Ester to at least be happy for him, so this sudden spark of bitterness catches him completely off-guard. He stares at her blankly, mouth agape as she says her piece. “Ester---” He furrows his brow, his heart sinking directly into his boots, the joy and the thrill of the victory having all but evaporated.
Sure, he’d pissed off a lot of people by going back to defend his championship, and he’d even convinced her to postpone their wedding several times, but in his obsession with the sport, Alex has never once realized the impact it has on Ester, too. And now, maybe it’s too late. “Why are you saying all of this now? And not---” He looks like someone has just slapped him across the face. “Why?”
