“She’s the spitting image of you as a baby.” Alexander whispers in admiration as he watches Mag get distracted by a mobile. “Bald, no eyebrows, and no eyelashes.” he adds, stifling a laugh, accompanied by a couple of big tears.
“Thanks, Dad!”
The blonde rolls her eyes and steps closer, placing a hand on his shoulder, joining in the routine of watching the baby go about her newborn activities, which include feeding, crying and spending hours on end entertaining herself with anything that moves in front of her. Margot Alexandra Cabot has just turned seven weeks old, and they’ve finally started receiving visitors, of course, the first would be the doting grandfather who’d been circling New York for days, eagerly awaiting this moment. Weighing almost eleven pounds, with rosy cheeks and blue eyes that seem to mirror her mom Alex’s, she can see herself in the little face that’s taking on more and more of the Cabot family’s features.
“Did you make Y/N really angry during pregnancy? Right?"
“What do you mean?” she doesn't know how he guessed that, her wife had wanted to strangle her for various reasons at all hours of the day for weeks, her hormones running wild, making Alex sleep with one eye open.
“There’s a superstition that when a pregnant woman picks a fight with someone, the baby might be born with that person’s face. And Mag is your exact spitting image, including the crooked little legs.” the man points and holds her little foot, covered in yellow socks.
“Daddy, she wanted to throw me off the balcony just because I picked the wrong ice cream flavor…” she confesses in an embarrassed whisper.
“Once your mom threw a vase at me and made me sleep in the living room. A few months later, you were born, just like me. Those legs are your grandfather’s, he used to drive your grandmother crazy, too.” Alexander recounts it as if it were some kind of legend, something inevitable. “I should have warned you.”
“But I was trying to do everything just right.”
“My child, we have a knack for annoying our pregnant wives.” the man shakes his head with pity and understanding. “It’s natural.”
She nods and breaks into a big smile when she realizes that Margot is now paying attention to them, making cute faces until she finally offers a sort of smile in return, not a spasm like the other times, but one of those first moments that parenting books talk about and it happened just as the three generations were gathered together. It’s more perfect than she ever imagined it would be, after all, she’d already tried to coax a smile out of her with funny faces, cuddles, and even tickles countless times.
“Love, run over here!” Alex shouts, staring at her daughter as if that would make her keep that same smile until mommy shows up.
“What happened?!” Y/N appears in the doorway, a dish towel draped over her shoulders and looking completely panicked, the last time she was called in a hurry, it was to pull a baby covered in vomit from a terrified Alex who feared the baby was choking. “Is she okay?”
“She smiled! My love, Mag smiled!”
Before she can react, Alex grabs her by the waist and spins her around, celebrating this latest milestone as if she had won a victory in court. Then she gives her a long kiss on the lips, setting her down on the floor in front of the crib so she, too, can enjoy the sight of their little girl’s adorable dimples and sweet eyes. Margot waves around her chubby arms and opens one hand to try to grab a few strands of Alex’s hair as she leans in to kiss her on the forehead, a thing she’s recently learned and always puts into practice.
“My God, she’s so perfect!” Y/N is speechless; every day she’s amazed by motherhood and all these experiences she’s been going through since that test came back positive.
“Love, are you okay?”
Alex approaches and hugs her gently when she notices tears welling up in the corners of her eyes, soon falling freely and soaking her button-down shirt. Alexander gives her two gentle pats on the back and, with her other hand, covers his eyes, and his own tears. When his wife passed away, Alexandra, their firstborn and only child, became his sole family. He did everything in his power to care for, love and protect her after the whole witness protection situation. He was immensely relieved when she left the district attorney’s office and moved on to something safer, she even accepted a position at one of his companies and took on more responsibilities as his heir. But he thought his lineage would end there; after all, ever since she was a child, she had made it clear she didn’t want children and had devoted most of her adult life to her career. At least until she met her wife and became the most passionate woman on earth, now the most loving and devoted mother. Alexander is so proud and shows photos of the baby to all his friends, explaining how she has the name he wanted to give Alex before Madeleine decided on Alexandra, in addition to carrying this family name, as well as the undeniable genes, and that she would become just as good at debating and sailing as they are.
“I can’t believe you two!” the blonde stifles a laugh and pulls her father by the arm into a hug, one on each side of her body, crying profusely while Margot kicks the air with more smiles. “I think she’s enjoying all this attention.”
“Of course she is,” the younger woman laughs and wriggles free from her wife’s arms, bending down to pick up the baby and cradling her against her chest. “Look what you’ve done to Grandpa, my love.”
“Oh, how embarrassing.” he tries to wipe his face and keep composure, but collapses into Alex’s arms again when he hears the baby let out a scream, another thing she’s recently learned, though she usually uses this strategy to get more milk, not attention. “She’s so cute! A carbon copy of Alex, I can just see you all over again, tiny and adorable, with those curious little eyes. Of course, she takes after you a lot too, darling.” Alexander waves to his daughter-in-law and turns back to Margot. “And that’s why she’s so perfect!”
He looks at the women in his life and the little girl among them, remembering when he had that same love in the eyes, that tenderness and dedication, with Madeleine. All those moments flash before his eyes like a movie. Many years ago, it was he who held Alexandra that very same way, a little shaky, afraid of hurting her and admiring his firstborn, trying to memorize every feature of her face before she grew up too quickly. Now she is the one holding her own daughter, surrounded by a love so great that no one can describe it, only feel it. And the proof of this is that Margot has just melted the hearts of three adults with a simple smile.
