the morning passed in a haze of unease. the search continued for hours, voices echoing through the trees, each name called out only met with silence.
the snowfall had thickened, erasing any clear tracks, making it impossible to tell where anyone had gone. but no one stopped … determined for locate the missing before it was too late.
then, it happened.
the body was found near the edge of the lake, half buried in the snow. roberta santos lay motionless, limbs frozen and perfectly posed as if to convey a message. frost had settled over her skin, her eyes dull and unfocused beneath the thin layer of ice clinging to her lashes. the blood beneath her had already frozen, dark streaks staining the snow where it had pooled. obvious signs of struggle.
everything stilled. a breathless silence stretched between them, a quiet that pressed heavy on their chests.
the snowfall continued.
the weight of it all settled in an instant.
roberta was dead.
and two were still missing.

the discovery fractured the morning’s urgency, replacing it with something colder. the search for juno and bernice continued, but the focus had shifted. fear lingered in every movement, uncertainty heavy in the space between them.
no one knew what had happened or when, only that the night had swallowed three of their own, and now one had been found lifeless in the snow.
questions went unanswered. no one could say who had seen her last. no one remembered hearing anything unusual.
theories formed in cautious glances and hesitant movements. the weight of suspicion settled across the group, unspoken but present in the way they avoided looking at each other for too long.

by the time the sun had begun to set, the atmosphere in the cabin had shifted. roberta’s body had been brought inside, covered as best as possible. the blankets did nothing to erase the sight of her, the reality of what had happened, or the fact that no one had an answer for how it had come to this.
there was no way to call for help. no way to leave. the storm had sealed them in, the roads buried beneath thick snow, the landline unresponsive, and cell service flickering in and out before vanishing completely.
the hours stretched long and heavy.
the plan had been to spread harper’s ashes at dawn, but the thought of stepping outside again, of facing the reality of what had already happened, made the decision difficult. some argued for waiting, for delaying until the situation felt more under control. others saw no point in postponing.
a shift had occurred. the weight of uncertainty had turned into something harsher as the realization settled in slowly.
whoever had done this was still among them.
