Delusions of Grandeur: Gentrification and Hip Hop

Gentrification isn't a new phenomenon... They've been doin it all along. After Reconstruction, but not even in just that sense. They do it in music too and have done it since we started creating genre's. I don't know too many young cats out here who can tell me who Chuck Berry is... Or who Robert L. Johnson is... But is it our fault? Sometimes I wanna say yes and no... Yes because we didn't value it the way we should've... We didn't know it's worth or how much of a blessing Rock was and still is. We didn't know how beautiful the blues was and still is. If you take pride in something that you create you aren't going to let it go so easily. I say No as well because the things we do take pride in we usually don't have the business sense or smarts to keep a hold of it. We always get taken advantage of because WE LET IT HAPPEN TO US. And what I see in history with Rock, The Blues, and Jazz I see happening to hip hop right now. If you truly love this culture... Not just the music but the culture stand up man... Honestly thats one of the only reasons I still rap. And if it was the only reason... It'd be enough. Because I take pride in the culture and I take pride in the people that helped build the foundation for this hip hop culture. What I look like handing over my Heirloom for pennies? I ain't gotta be rich out here... I ain't gotta be wealthy. Cuz riches can be gone in the blink of an eye and you could die at any moment and you can't take none of that with you. All you leave is a legacy... So what will yours say? I'm gonna save the world man... You just don't know it yet.
