Though naturally a hardy race, it was only though their domestication of the Swan bug that they were able to survive in this unforgiving territory, using the large, non-predatory animals as load- and water-carriers and of course as a major foodsource - although the meat is far too tough to eat for those unaccustomed. The Yed also harvest the spines of the bugs' filament-like 'tusks' (actually overgrown mouthparts which the males use in mating displays) for tools and crafts, and for home building. The animals are traditionally kept and tended to by family heads, and prized bugs are occasionally given as dowries or as gifts between tribes. Dowries: property or money brought by a bride to her husband on their marriage.
