Summary: The frost nipped all who were outside, but in this apartment, it was just her and Col. In which, Percy is finally the winner, and Madeline is the loser.

The quiet ticking of the analogue clock on the wall echoed in Madeline's room, too distant for it to bother her, but just noticeable if she listened hard enough. The living room's silence was lightly obstructed by her humming, and the hearth embers crackling. The heater and the fire both worked to fight the biting winter cold, but Col found their head resting in Madeline's head anyway.
To any onlookers, this would've been described as the peak of domestic bliss—warm and close in all the ways that seemed to matter. Madeline, like a habit, starting listening to Col's breaths, threading her fingers through their hair as if it was in her nature to do so. Her gaze was planted to the fire, watching the kindle-wood wilting into ashes, while Col was caught up by something on their phone.
The cozy atmosphere was poked at by a low chuckle, Col's lips curving into something fond. It was enough to pull Madeline from her daze, and seeing the smirk on her roommate's face was enough for a slight smile to bloom on her own. Instinctually, she leaned down just a little to see what was happening.
"What's so funny?"
Col didn't freeze, only a deep rose blush dusking on their cheeks. They dropped their phone onto their chest, letting it slide to the couch-side. Madeline placed her hand over it, catching it before it slid off. She noted the wayward shine in her roommate's eyes, mistiness in them giving away from deeply intoxicated. Just Col's expression alone made her heart sink into her stomach. Still, she kept herself looking sweet.
"Nothing special," Col paused for a moment, grabbing their phone and turning the screen up for Madeline to see. "It's just Percy."
Just Percy, her ass—he was a fucking famous popstar with thousands of fans for a reason. His demented smirk branded itself bitterly in Madeline's mind. She swallowed the stone growing in her throat, feeling it dig a pit in her gut. Yet, her facade didn't waver, and she scrolled down to find all of the horridly flirtatious texts that seemed to wall-to-wall with the thick kind of humour that she knew oh, so well.
"Mmm," She let out a non-committal noise. "He's pathetic," Without missing a beat, she continued. "You deserve better."
She spoke with a tone of jest, but there was something biting beneath her breath. Each gruesomely cheesy text engrained itself into her head, and foul words started forming on the tip of her tongue, but she would not let a single syllable of that poison slip from her. Col's gaze zoomed in on the narrowing of her eyes, which said every thought she dared to hide.
"You always say that."
They took their phone back, placing it on the floor screen-down, pinching Madeline's nose. She scrunched her face, gingerly rubbing circles on their wrist. There was an odd feeling of dread and satisfaction running through their bones, seeing Madeline riled up in her own way. Green with jealousy was probably the better way of phrasing it.
"It's always true."
She said it so confidently, like it was a well-known fact. Her eyes sparkled with everything that had come and gone, surrendering a tenderness that would bleed if Col poked the wrong spot—but just like that, Madeline patched herself back up, and went back to her previous state of composure.
"So, seems like I missed a few things," Madeline brushed her fingers through Col's hair one more time, regaining a sort of pep in her step that felt too practiced to be real. "Catch me up."
She beckoned the truth forward. Col was never too good at lying, or keeping secrets. Especially not when Madeline looked at them with her angel eyes.
