Coppelia at the Mariinsky
I'm hearing rumors that the Mariinsky will debut a new production of Coppelia staged by Alexander Sergeev…and it made me wonder when was the last time they performed Coppelia? It seems to have been a very long time ago. There are hundreds of clips of the Vikharev production at the Bolshoi. How/why did the Mariinsky let this ballet end up in a dust heap? So odd… Anyway, I'm glad it's coming back. (If rumors are true!) And I'm so curious about casting. The most recent clip that I could quickly find was from the Kirov in 1993, fearing Irina Shapchit dancing the Swanilda variation from Act 3.
I know nothing about Ms. Shapchit and discovered that she now goes by her married name, Irina Zavialova. She and her husband left Russia in 1995 for the West where they worked at several smaller ballet companies. It seems like she was one of the talents that "got away" in the turmoil of the 90s. She's now teaching in Norway from what I gather. Here's an interview with her from the 90s
It's almost a foregone conclusion that Shakirova will be first cast in this. BTW, I still haven't seen Ratmansky's production at La Scala, but I've heard that it's really good. It's on the list. The full production can be streamed on Medici TV:

What do you think of Kokoreva’s debut as Swanhilda? I saw her ig pics and it looks nice. Also from the pics I noticed Sevenard was one of Swanhilda’s friends and I was like wtf she is a leading soloist
I have seen brief clips floating around but I’d bet more substantial footage will be up soon. On what I have seen, she looks sweet and charming. The character seems like it’s a nice reflection of her true personality, she can simply relax and be herself, this isn’t a particularly challenging ballet emotionally. Most ballerinas who can dance a good Kitri also do well as Coppelia, due to similarities between the mood and choreographic text. Kokoreva has a light buoyant jump that the choreography makes good use of, she seems suspended at the top of her grand jete’s for an extra millisecond. I haven’t seen much of the pdds or the earlier acts variations so I can’t comment in more technical detail now. If the videos pop up, maybe I can discuss further if people are interested :)
I saw Sevenard in the photos too and I did a double take before I cracked up. I’d bet a lot of money that she’s NOT happy to be dancing that after the Kitri debacle from last weekend. She should have been resting and relaxing after those taxing shoes. BT makes no sense sometimes…there are tones of lower ranked soloists/ corps girls who would make better use of that opportunity. Even if they had to through someone like Zhiganshina in, that would have been better. The role is beneath her too imo but at least she’s not coming off a marathon weekend.
EDIT: I got confused and thought Kokoreva performed Swanilda again when there were just a lot of reposts of her debut from January. Sevenard was still a soloist then and was scheduled just like a normal performance.
