It was one of those nights where Ruby drags her out for a few drinks, she refuses because she has work in the morning but somehow she still ends up at the bar with her and a bit tipsy. Emma never knows how it fully happens but eventually, she started to get used to it, maybe even stopped really fighting it as much.
When she goes out Ruby always tries to get her into too small of clothes and a lot of makeup, that’s where she draws the line. When Emma goes out she doesn’t want to dress differently than how she normally does because it may give people a different idea about her than she wants. This specific night she wore black skin-tight pants, a tank top with a greyish brown leather jacket over it and her ankle boots. Her blonde locks were framing her face in waves that was pretty much her natural wave and she had her usual light makeup on.
She did have to agree that today was a good night to celebrate, she just got her own apartment in a town where she just moved to. Her best friend lives not even 10 minutes away and she has a job interview set up at the sheriff’s station to be a deputy. If that’s not a good reason to go out for the night and get wasted then Emma doesn’t know what is. Even though she does have to get up tomorrow to work at the diner that Ruby’s Granny gave her a job at, she still thinks it’s a big enough step in her life to celebrate it.
Emma hasn’t lived in one place for longer than a year, and that was pushing it for her. She never had a permanent job, always something that she could easily find in every town or city. That limited her to waitress, bartender, bailbondsperson or some resale worker. Growing up in the system gave her bad habits and a fear of finding a home. Don’t misunderstand that though, she wants more than anything to find a place that when she leaves she just misses it but it scares the hell out of her. So far whenever she leaves it never pains her enough to go back.
But now, here she is, in Storybrooke, Maine where her best friend lives and she had always come to visit. She has been here for 9 months, most of that time was spent crashing in the Inn that Ruby’s Granny owns or on Ruby’s couch but now she’s signing a lease for half a year, which means she is stuck and she’ll pass her mark of only staying at places for a year max. It scares her to death but she’s trying not to think about it, if she ever decides that she really wants to leave she can, she’ll just have to pay for it.
Almost everything she has ever envied other people for having she had right now in this town; she has a job, food (three meals sometimes more a day), her car, an apartment and a few friends who like to force her to go out and have fun with them because if she doesn’t the world will end. According to Ruby.
She’s feeling a bit hot right now because she had just gotten off the dance floor and away from the non-stop drunk dancing Ruby who is a bit too handsy. It’s not that Emma doesn’t like when women touch her, she just doesn’t feel that way about Ruby and she would rather not _ever _complicate things with her. Ruby is the only person that has been a somewhat constant in her life, they met back when Emma was in a group home and the lanky brunette was there as well. Ruby had a home though, the courts were just being stupid and forced her to stay there until Ruby’s granny legally adopted her. They kept in contact off and on until they were older and began to text all the time. Whenever Emma lived close enough she’d go visit her and Granny because if there was anything that felt close to home it would be them.
So back to the dancing and being hot, she decided to walk away and back to the booth that they had designated as theirs. All night she had been focusing on celebrating and her friends that she hadn’t looked around to notice how incredibly packed it was in there. That explains why she’s feeling so hot, there is like no oxygen left in the building.
She starts to drink a water that one of her other friends comes back with and closes her eyes to cherish the taste, her mouth is numb from the alcohol but the icy cold water soothes it. When she opens her eyes they land on a woman at the bar, the blonde doesn’t know how or why it happened but it’s too late now. She stood up, there were a few questions shouted at her by friends that were at the table with her on where she was going and if she’s okay. All she knew was that she wanted to go over to the bar and see this woman.
She doesn’t believe in fate...
She doesn’t believe in destiny...
but apparently drunk Emma does because she didn’t care about any logical reason not to walk up to a complete stranger. She also didn’t care that they were technically in a club that wasn’t designated for LGBT, so it was more than likely she was not into women. Yet, here she is, standing right beside the woman sitting at the bar who looks to be waiting for someone and that’s still not enough for drunk Emma apparently she wants to talk.
“Is it hot in here or is it just you?”
