Swarley

How I feel about this character? 

Swarley is adorable. I have had this opinion of him ever since I encountered him with Jonathan, and it persists even now - despite all the robot-eating and his growing disillusion. He’s an awkward bundle of joy. And it’s hard not to love him when many of his small eccentricities are for the benefit of all.

I recall a conversation between Melody and Swarley where he tells her that he has a vast collection of blankets and quilts just for the sake of keeping people nice and warm in his home. How can anyone not love a person like that? - Well other than Lulacroix, but she’s the exception rather than the rule.

His particularly detached manner of speaking adds to Swarley’s otherworldliness. You can tell in a way that he’s no longer suited to follow human conventions and laws despite him seemingly being human once. But you can’t help but cheer for him as you see him struggling to anyway. Of course, Swarley’s speaking tone combined with his candor can make for some really awkward conversations. 

The jello girl serves to be one good example. The starting tone of that conversation can be summed up in one sentence from Swarley which is along the lines of “I don’t think food should be allowed on the computer."   

Of course, despite his cute antics, he isn’t really an innocent character. Yes, he dislikes profanity and complains about inane things like the fact his socks never feel right or children pointing out his lack of toes, but you can tell that Swarley has some extremely blurry lines when it comes to morality.

He may protect humankind, but he doesn’t see them as equal. To me, he sees them like pets: it’d be terrible if something happened to them, but in terms of the world it is a drop in the ocean. For equals, I think he only sees the phenotypes as such. 

His strong sense of justice is emotionally detached (except in the case of children).

When his emotion does get perked up though, prepare yourself for an overdose of cute or an overdose of “this is gonna be fucking awesome." 

 People I ship romantically with this character?

Melody.

 My non-romantic bff OTP for this character?

Donnivan. Despite his opinion of him.

And then maybe Elias. 

 My unpopular opinion about this character?

Swarley is uncertain of who he is in the past. He believes he used to be human before he got transformed into what he is now. And in a way, I think he made this decision to become more than human on his own - especially when hearing him talk about how humans are inferior creatures. However, it is hard to tell if this is an opinion he’s had all his life or only after his transformation. 

Considering Swarley’s emotional detachment from justice as seen in the Austell Funeral where he’s essentially like “oh elias is shooting up people", I think CAST or whoever created him might have artificially instilled his sense of justice. (He does seem to have a genuine love for kids though since he does tear Lulacroix apart for it.)

I can imagine that his separation from CAST due to the quarantine might cause this potential programming to unravel, and what we might have left is a Swarley with his growing disillusionment deciding that the humans are too stupid and weak for their own good.

Essentially, Swarley becomes the Magneto of Phenotypes, and the Phenotype Unity Coalition in the end becomes the means to do it. 

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character?

We need a bodybuilder Swarley roaming around and freaking people out just for laughs. 

Barring that, it would be interesting to see Swarley freak out at a random human custom. Or maybe Swarley celebrating Christmas. *w*

▼ Childhood Headcanon ::

When the matron died and was no longer able to home-school Risette in the orphanage, Risette entered the public education system as a middle-schooler. She learned that her peers were dumb. Really dumb. As in “did they suffer brain damage when they choked from eating their Elmer’s Glue level of dumb”.

But that wasn’t the worst of it. When she was taught by the matron, she got to learn many different things and was able to focus on the things that interested her. The school didn’t do that. She was forced to learn second and third languages despite the fact she was utterly shit at them. She had to go to art when she can’t even draw a straight line consistently. And worst of all, she had to learn English all over again.

And then there was the environment. Her peers sucked and were useless. No, she did not want to do their homework. They should go do their own. No, she did not come to school to be jeered at because of her supposed crippling shyness which was actually caused by their inability to can the obviousness of their puberty-driven emotions or the fact that her eyes were practically golden by now. If it weren’t for the orphanage sending her rather large record of violence to the school, she probably would’ve tried something sneaky and underhanded to get even. The matron’s schooling was far superior. Yes, she had to learn some hard truths like the fact that it was impossible to be an educated wandering ronin saving people like a superhero in this day and age, but giving up that dream had made her realize her true calling.

Computer science and programming.

To her, a computer was practically like having a second brain - yes, a second brain that you had to tell what to do but was far faster at processing calculations than her own. And as she became more experienced with its use, she learned something. The computer is an exceptionally powerful tool as the world they live in and the world online might as well be one at the same: they were so tightly coupled together that things affecting one world will affect the other.

Destroy a computer, and you destroy the data that’s within it. Randomly post several compromising pictures that you found on a hated teacher’s hard drive, and you can make them go to jail.

What’s better is that, though computer activity could be tracked, most lacked the knowledge to actually do it. Knowing how to cover your tracks made tracing practically impossible. Therefore, it was a much better way to get revenge on someone than arranging a potentially life-threatening accident where you’d be the first suspect anyway.

However, it would only until high school that Risette would gain that level of proficiency, but the idea of getting retribution on her cruel, stupid peers managed to curb her more obvious, violent tendencies for those three years.

Guess I'll have to care for and nurture them until they are all purring and rubbing their furry bodies against my leg before I put their head on the chopping block.

I probably need to be the one to cook these cats for that "food with love" thing to work. Guess I'll steal some cats from the nearby apartment complex then. I think they'll go good with stir-fry.

Don't worry. It still tastes just as good. Perhaps even better considering I am now eating something that was once loved.
