I am very interested in how you design your little swirls and curls on your letters, how do you do it?
I'm not sure if you mean the curls on the end of cursive letters, or the more intricate designs I sometimes use for initial capital letters. For the intricate capital letters, most of the time I'm copying other people's designs that are old enough to be out of copyright! I've built up a collection of alphabets and ornamental initials, mostly from looking through printer's specimen books from the 1800s on the texts section of the internet archive. For the curls coming off of cursive letters, these are called swashes. I've looked at how other calligraphers do them to get some ideas, because there's a lot of variations. To design them I write out a test run of the phrase in ink and draw the swashes in pencil so I can change them easily. I just keep messing around until I feel like they look balanced, not overcrowded in one spot or sparse in another spot, and not too crowded overall.
