A Review of My Art Blog (So Far)

I created this blog to showcase some pieces I was Designing and Working on for my projects in SWC for the HND in Games Design. This Blog allows me to extend the reach of my portfolio, allowing me to receive feedback from different Art Based Communities or anyone who stumbles across it.

I completed a lot of my pieces with Pen and Pencil as it was what I was most commonly used in the past, however, now I wish to switch my focus to art with a Graphic Tablet, as I find it far much easier to use and overall more enjoyable to create with.

I feel that my pieces meet the requirements for my task, as they fit the bill quite nicely with what I was tasked to create, however, if I were to go back, I would work more on documenting earlier stages of some pieces to showcase how I got to the final piece better.

I found myself improving more and more when I moved away from a Pen and Paper focus and to the freedom of using an Graphics Tablet, it felt far more comfortable to create with and I feel the pieces I’ve made with the Graphics Tablet turned out better than those I create without it.

I tied to manage my time effectively, making sure I uploaded twice a week, however some matters would require my attention on some days so I may have missed a few days.

The Following are two pieces,

The first is the finished Greatsword Piece, coloured in with Charcoal Sticks, I feel that the Piece looks well, however I feel that it could of been made better by using a different Medium like Colour Pencil or Pen

The second is the finished Cyberpunk Assault Rifle, the effect was made by using Coloured Markers to get the Machined Grey Steel colouring. I quite like this piece and feel I could make use of the effect to create more weapons in the same style.

Here are the corrections to the Axe and Dagger, as well as the Femur detailed to a finer quality.

An Industrial Generator, drawn in the 3D Design Style, then Coloured and Shaded with Charcoal Sticks to give a deep Black for shadows, or Greys to simulate Metal

And a Laser Pistol was drawn in a similar way to the Generator, in the 3D style and Coloured with some Coloured Markers to give a mix of Plastic and Metal to the Pistol Design

I do like these Pieces, but I feel that the Generator could have been made better and with more detail

A small update to the woodland scene, adjusting the look to the tree line and adding some background imagery making it more inline with a natural feel to the piece.

I also drew some quick sketches for some ideas for "Anatomy In Motion" focusing on the motions the skeletal figurings and how they could move in a natural way to mirror real world movements.

I then moved on to the Physiology side to improve the for of my Anatomy Drawings, to include a range of stances, then to improve upon one stance into a Characters Design Idea, in this case a Rogue/Mage to fit a Fantasy Setting

These pieces were made to practice the details on faces, mainly Eyes and Hair. I first made Jim as a rougher, quicker design to build up a basis, then spent my time on the hair to work on a realistic style by using multiple brushes with different sizes, patterns and colours. Later I adjusted it to create Bob, where I adjusted the features to more realistic proportions in scale with the rest of the head, as well as adding extra detail to the eyes and hair.

I was practicing drawing eyes with the graphics tablet as part of the anatomy sketches. Using multiple brushes and layers to create different looks and effects for each Eye drawn.

I like the styles of each and will keep the technique in mind when I design more characters

This sketch was done with a graphics tablet and is my outline to a “warrior mid-charge”, it was made from a stick figure and the grey is set to outline the armour. The Colour i have and will use are laid out along the base of the image for quick swapping in Photoshop. I will be adding additional Layers to add better details.

This was taken from a small session where I attempted to make some basic sketches of real world objects and practicing some techniques like Cross Hatching to simulate shadow, and Blocking, where I made a simple block out of the object and built the object by using the shapes and sketching in the details.
