“If I’m to choose between one evil and another, I’d rather not choose at all.”
“We are not always given that luxury.”
Life would be far simpler if everything had a safe and ethical option, but that was not the case. Sometimes difficult decisions needed to be made or they would be made for them.
“If there is a third option take it, but do not allow someone else to make a choice of two evils for you. Better to have a choice than none at all.”
“Men’s hearts hold shadows darker than any tainted creature.”
“Because creatures have a single goal in mind that boils down to their own survival. People can lie and cheat and steal for selfish goals not related to surviving. They do it simply because they can or because they want to cause pain not because they have to.”
“What’s got you all riled up?”
Step, step, step, step, step, turn.
And repeat.
Pacing gave Winter something to do, something else to focus on other than fear that twisted into anger. She was far more used to acting out of anger. At least that felt like she had some shred of control over.
“There is no need for you to concern yourself with this, Weiss. Just go.”
“Can you teach me how to do magic like you?”
Winter wasn’t entirely surprised by Weiss’ question. She had seen the interest her little sister took in her spellwork, but it wasn’t so easy as to spend five minutes trying to teach something. Time was needed to perfect techniques, and even then not all magic would come easily to everyone.
Even so, she wouldn’t outright deny her sister’s request.
“It will take years of practice and dedication. You cannot choose to take on such lessons if you plan to slide by without the work. Are you certain you want to learn?”
“Can you read my fortune?”
“That depends entirely what you are looking for. Something very specific? Then no. Love life requests? No. A general answer to a question or a guideline? I can see what I can do.”
Fortune telling wasn’t exactly her area of expertise, but she could do a reading in a pinch if need be.
“I may have accidentally spilled water on your spellbook.”
Winter stared down her sister for a long moment in silence. The spellbook was a labor of years of work, but luckily she had prepared for mishaps. The book itself would need to be replaced over time as the pages and binding would warp, but everything written should still be legible.
“Luckily for you I used an ink that is waterproof after it dries.”
“Your health is deteriorating. Take a break or I’ll make you.”
“Make me?”
The idea was somewhat amusing, if she was to be honest. Her little sister had grown to stand up to her, but Winter wasn’t exactly going to bend to the demand.
“Weiss, I have worked under more stressful conditions than this. I am fine. You do not need to step in, I assure you.”
