i was not interested in him at all at first but actually looking into the implications of xue pan's background makes me pretty damn sad. he's so deranged but there's only so many times you can be resurrected via the in-world life insurance without your mental faculties disintegrating bit by bit. going off of what baochai alludes to when talking about him, it's not a stretch to assume that his family just killed him over and over trying to force him to behave a certain way. i believe she mentioned something about editing his personality or trying to "tame" him.

if we're going full chinese household traumacore they probably beat him to death repeatedly trying to force him to be like what they wanted

was asking a friend some help to teach me how to copy and past words from a pdf that doesn't let me do that because i'm trying to copy and past a quote to use in an argument and too lazy to retype the whole thing, yknow, very academic style,

and it suddenly reminded me of when i reread this book, in public (the doctor's waiting room), that i own a physical copy of with annotation and sticker notes everywhere, that made a doctor who was coming in and out while i was waiting for mine, to stop and look at my book and going "that's so many notes. Is that for school?" and i was flabbergasted a second before replying "... no, that's for leisure." which made him stare even more in awe

and i'm realizing how generally insane i must look from the outside about all of this
