thank you for bringing indycar in general and josef newgarden in particular into my life 😭
I LOVE YOU K!!!!!!!
Wahh I'm just. I'm so so happy to be sharing this with you and so many of the beloved buddies on here. Sports can truly be the greatest thing in the world.... Would've loved to have celebrated the UCL and the Prem with you too, and now we have this. May it be the first of many (Scotty Mac 2024 propaganda starts now)!!!!!!!
#Josef basically saying Before you came into my life I missed you so bad......... <- i just took so much psychic damage from this
I've been thinking about this a lot. There's just something about how Scott has brought Josef out of his shell. I've watched a stupid amount of media all the way from Josef's debut, and I think he was boxed into the happy go lucky persona despite having admitted himself that he's more introverted, prickly, and nerdy than what he has a tendency to let on. That's a man who'd rather talk about Dragon Ball Z with a fan than anything racing-related...
He seemed to be comfortable with it during the SFH and ECR era (he was basically one the faces of the IndyCar media, he's done so many media shenanigans including the most cursed one of them all) and just rolled with it. The Penske switch put a different pressure on him, and as he's pushed even more in the spotlight, he's had to further lean into this prescribed media persona.
As Josef said himself, Scott on the other hand is just always himself, unapologetically, bringing a great energy to the team and being a respectful competitor to go up against on track. Maybe it made Josef realize it's perfectly fine to give away a little more of his authentic self to the audience. That it's possible to have fun and be silly with your buddy while being a top contender for the championship year in year out. And he's showing this by being so generous with his praise and so open about his affection for Scott... All the banter but never the snippy one-upping or bro-ish playful mocking, always 'if it wasn't me, I want to see you succeed'...
My current project I'm actually adding words to! Slowly, but the words are coming!
Iowa bets is a quickly renamed document cause the working title gave it away, but it's based on this! I think I said it was gonna be a simple PWP like half a year ago but guess what, it grew plot and complications.
Snippet is below the cut, probably my favourite bit that I wrote so far.
WIP asking thing
It’s a short drive over and the restaurant is nice, warm and inviting. It leans towards a rustic look, with wooden beams along the walls and rough cut wooden furniture. They’re shown to a table in the corner and their hostess lights the candle in the middle of the table as they take their seats. She hands them the menu, telling them a server will be by shortly to take their order.
She walks away and Callum quirks an eyebrow at Kyle.
“What?” Kyle asks when Callum doesn’t say anything.
The corners of Callum’s lips twitch up. “This spot is kinda romantic don’t you think?” He rests his elbows on the table, leaning forward. The candle light flickers over his face, sending shadows dancing across his features.
Kyle glances around them and Callum’s right. The table they’re at is tucked away in the corner, with a row of tall, potted ferns between them and the next table, obscuring them from sight. There’s country music playing over the speakers, blending in with the quiet murmur of the other diners and the lighting casts everything in a warm glow. It’s a cozy spot, Kyle thinks, cozy and private.
“I guess, yeah,” Kyle says slowly, turning back to Callum.
“You could have just asked me out on a date instead of making up a bet, you know,” Callum pauses. “I would have said yes.”
“I… you’re the one who challenged me!” Kyle says, ignoring the last part.
no you really don't want to hear it because it's mostly incomprehensible rambling...... it's just that we're so used to seeing drivers, especially teammates interact with each other in fun ways, but in what could be said to be in a coworker bestie way, and most of the times people get that bond from karting (when the pressure is not as evident), which eventually evolves into a friendship. but something happened with these two; that somehow they found each other later in life, both in very different parts of their careers (one an established world champion, one who just started driving these type of cars, rookie in the sport), and instead of the obvious happening (they fight head to head to prove who's the n1 driver), they are just ??? mesmerised with each other ???? they support each other ???? they start new racing series together because racing alongside each other makes sense ????
josef said it best himself: "i don't know how you can coexist in this type of environment" but they do. they broke every mold and made home of each other; "i want to smash this guy's face in, and i also really like him and kinda want him to do well but i also don't want him to do well" because this! is! sport! your teammate is the first person you want to beat, the one you're measured against. hell! they both were title contenders last year, that never stopped them from developing a real human connection that goes beyond what it is expected from your teammate. josef even said that he seems like a new person because of scott, "he's probably brought up a little bit more of me". that is how impactful they are in each other's life. they didn't need to meet sooner, they met when they met. a soulmate for life. i need to be put down.
