I saw your post about reading/translating a short story in german, how did you go about it? like did you write down your translation or do it in your head when you knew what it meant already?
I focused on one sentence at a time and translated any words that I didn’t know into English and then when I knew all the word I tried to fit them together to form a coherent sentence. I definitely wrote down my translation because it helped me notice patterns and I could look back at words that kept recurring. And even if I did know exactly what the sentence meant I still wrote it down.
I also used google translate (*gasp*) if I couldn’t understand a sentence AT ALL to help me at least understand it in English and then I went back to see how google got that translation. I also used it to check if my translations made some sense.
So basically by the end of it, I had same story written in both German and English.
