Your Ceremony II - Love Letters and Vows
Love letters. About 25-30 years ago, I stumbled at an idea for a wedding content I asked the bride and groom during our preparation to write one another a one to two-page love letter with examples and stories. A kind of x-ray profile, explaining what each found most unique and lovable about the other and share these letters with me to help me get to know them better. Then, I would select several excerpts and get their permission, weave them into the wedding homily reflection. I soon discovered that what you say about one another is a thousand times more powerful than anything I could read or say. It’s just a suggestion, dear bride, but I haven’t found a more touching, personal, intimate ingredient than your love letters. Your vows are another area where you can add a bit of your own heart and soul to your ceremony. Vows say three things: I give me to you, I accept the gift of you to me, and in forever. Relatively easy to enhance and expand. Or, write your own vows on a small card and have your celebrant whisper the words to you phrase by phrase so you can repeat aloud and have to worry about memorizing anything. Every element in your wedding should symbolize unity. Your vows or promises of oneness, your rings (signs of unbreakable love), your unity candle parents pass their light and love unto you by lighting your individual candles, and then you use those tapers to light the single larger candle to become one. Other symbols of unity might include fan, lasso, bella, monedas raras, the Jewish hoopa or orthodox rug, yuor wedding party, flowers, prayers, blessings, communal peace greetings, holy communion, taking one another’s names, guest book, tender touching toast, sharing food and drink and, often the most moving memorable spiritual glue for bringing people together, the music— before, during, and after your ceremony especially on the dance floor. Additionally, please do not hesitate to incorporate any special cultural customs that hold special meaning for you two—American, African, Asian, Indian, French, Russian, Filipino, Italian, Jewish, Scottish. Hawaiian, Persian, Latin, Hispanic. Your cultural or family customs and rituals both expand and personalize your celebration. The one symbol out of place today is the rice throw. Rice is food for half the people in the world and it’s messy and dangerous. Tell your supporters you want to be showered not with rice, bird seeds, balloons, confetti, or even soap bubbles, but with smiles, hugs, and love. Have you read the article about Your Marriage?
