Swing Coat: BurdaStyle 6275
This swing coat is a modern pattern, but it reminds me of both 1950s coats and 1960s capes. It has a funnel collar which is darted in the back to allow it to stand up properly, and an asymmetric opening which allows you to feature some special buttons, and keeps out the winds out too. They suggest both woolens and Polar Fleece.
It is marked “easy,” but you may want to make it not-quite-that-easy as it is unlined and has no pockets. So, since lining improves a jacket in many ways--allows it to slide on and off easily, finishes the interior--you may want to draft one. For me, it seems to take about as much time to finish all the seams inside a jacket as it does to make a lining and attach it. Fleece, of course, doesn’t need finishing as it does not ravel. Pockets are a bit more of a problem. Take the simpler route and put pockets in the side seams and you will find them just a little too far back to be easy to access; but welt pockets are more difficult and take some finesse to do properly. There might be ways to add dramatic patch pockets, but ponder those with a paper mock up and try placement first.

Wearing Memories: Red Swing Coat
When I was about 5 years old, my mother bought me a red swing coat. It was a very special present since we didn’t often have money for fancy clothes. I loved that coat and thought about it a great deal while growing up. When I went to college, I bought a red swing coat in a vintage shop because it reminded of me of my childhood version. Ever since, I have always had a red swing vintage coat in my wardrobe. The silhouette always fits, the color is always cheerful, and friends can spot me from a mile away. This is my current coat, which I’ve had for some time. It’s from the early 1960s by Lilli Ann of San Francisco. And, the best part is that my mother bought me this one as a gift, because she knows how much I love a good red vintage coat.
