Cleaning out my phone but found a dance I'm not mad at (thanks to my awesome lead Sebastian!). I *still* look like a beginner and my improvement hasn’t been as quick as most of my peers but holy hell it is THERE. There are so many things that I’ve been working on and applying and as a result I look a lot cleaner, controlled, leadable, my legs are straight(er), I’m much less clunky (still could be much smoother tbh), I hold my damn frame, I’ve discovered compression (lol) and I leverage it, learned how to calm the fuck down and wait, and seek to “create moments” as opposed to just getting through a dance during comps.
I need to work on:
-looking more grounded (potentially a finishing-each-movement thing? maybe a being-less-on-my-toes-and-rolling-through-my-feet thing? a more-heel-leads thing? a using-the-floor-more thing?)
-NEVER fully straightening my free arm, so ugly
-not walking like such a cowboy... and instead, singletrack as if I were on a tightrope
-take smaller steps, smaller steps = straighter legs!
-lengthen, lengthen, lengthen. Everything.
-keeping my feet turned out, they NEVER should be turned in, ever
-posture is good, but could be even better
-speed and acceleration (I know it’s a slow song, but I look... sluggish compared to how a pro would compete to this song. I think this has to do with continually moving to the end of the slot? or idk)
-really going for it, milking each moment, and taking some risks. I feel I’ve earned it as I understand the dance enough at this point. Also, it’s become a necessity if I want to be watchable.
-I look timid and unsure of my movements when I watch myself back?? wtf? I’ve been doing this for years, I’m pretty sure I know what I’m doing, but I don’t look like I do and I legit look lost sometimes or like a super beginner especially during the bad dances. Maybe that’s just my face, but I should try to disguise it more and ooze confidence and/or perform to the song and connect with my partner better. The looking unsure of my movements is probably a result of doing stuff halfway, which is NOT how I was brought up to behave by my dance teachers. This can probably be remedied by getting my butt to wcs practice so I can be more confident in my movement and choices, by continuing to video myself so I’m aware of what works and what doesn’t, and cross-training in hip hop, latin, jazz, contemporary, ballet (hell, anything) to keep up and increase my body awareness.
-probably other stuff but I would need to consult my coach when I have money for a private.
-open to suggestions too!

Fun retro promo video I did for Omaha Jitterbugs for their big Jamborama weekend. https://jitterbugs.org/
Before I knew there was an official Inktober I decided to start my own using costume suggestions from Facebook friends. So now I have 31 Costumes for Kiki for Inktober! But I will start the 31 Witches tomorrow along side this one! Anyways costume number one: Swing Dancer!
I hate ballroom dance. It’s like “here, let’s learn these 15 dances in the next hour”. Lessons are only $25. And then the following hour will be the FREE social (only if you attended lessons), during which we will rotate through those 15 different dances (and throw in a Vietnamese Counter-clockwise Waltz for veteran dancers who want a challenge :p). Also, it’s inappropriate for women to lead, or gentlemen to follow.
And if you’re really into it, you can buy a $600 bedazzled gown and sign up to do competition and then come to the “social” dances, to dance only with that partner you came with, and to wait for your song to come on so that you can jam up the dance floor with your routine that’s been choreographed down to the fingertips and facial expressions.
