Dating Apps: looks vs intelligence

Now here's from someone who tried the dating apps thing for about a year. From the point of view of a non-atractive extreme introvert with 0 experience at dating: it doesn't work.

In a world dominated by looks and where looking fit is trending (even with all the accept difference speeches), an highly intelligent but fat not-so-attractive guy has no chance to even get a like.

Numerous experiments have been made and scattered across Youtube and other platforms with people creating a real and a fake profile and fake always wins.

I even bothered to write a deep profile intro with basically everything someone could want to find in a partner. And though people always say "Yeah, I'm not going for looks, I'm looking for intelligence", in the end that's all a bunch of empty words.

In the world of swipes, the left swipe goes for looks, always.

Online vs Real Life

Social media and online dating has added to the false ideas of relationships.

The internet allows you to compare your life to others, and easily create a false sense of expectations. It also shows you everything you are missing. FOMO for a relationship? That can be a real thing.

It is not the real thing. Social media is made for creatively displaying the best moments of our lives. Which is exactly how someone would design their dating profile. Best moments are front and center.

This leaves current society with an entirely new factor that plays a huge role in dating norms.

Swiping left and right? You are essentially deciding who to start a lifelong connection with based on the judgment you make of them in a split second of flipping through their photos and maybe a sentence or two in their bio.

According to a study done by Pew Research about the impacts of online dating, “71% of online daters report that it was at least somewhat easy to find people on dating sites or apps that they found physically attractive, while about two-thirds say it was easy to find people who shared their hobbies or interests or seemed like someone they would want to meet in person. “ (Pew Research).

Although online dating makes it easier to find people around you, it might not really be that much more effective in helping you truly connect with these people. In 2013, only 3% of online dating app users reported that they had entered into long-term relationships with someone they met online(Pew Research). Why not take that chance in real life? 

There are many reasons why not everyone utilizes dating apps. Whether to avoid hook-up culture, the danger of harassment through apps, or simply because of the fatigue that comes from swiping and chatting for so long. It is not for everyone. But this still affects our expectations of love. It is undeniable the change that online dating has brought to the social world.

SWIPE RIGTH, DATE RIGHT, CHOOSE RIGHT, LOVE RIGHT

Trust the process.

Capitalism sells you the illusion that you can buy it all: fame, freedom, beautiful bodies, dating apps subscriptions, swipes and dates. But we all know pure love cannot be bought, but a dinner date is definitely possible.

          Once you get someone interested to meet you, your expectations are either a hook up if things head that way or a second date to try out the relationship. If you are looking for a hook up, you are seeing that other person as a product. The point I am trying to make is that instead of dating someone with the goal to consume and throw away what ever that person has to offer, see that person a posible asset or even an investment that you can liquidate in the future for your benefit.

Sounds crazy, buy here is a glimpse of the future...

I login into my online dating website or app, and what I see is people that have been recommend for me by friends for a date, and this people actually liked me back because they seem me before, so the chances for a dinner date increases 10x, when I swipe right. ¿Would you like a feed like that?
