Description

This painting is probably a fragment of a destroyed composition commissioned by Thomas Macklin in 1779 for his Poets' Gallery. The subject matter is taken from Shakespeare's Henry VIII (Act 4, scene 2) and shows the death of Queen Katherine. The classically dressed figures hovering in the air represents the 'spirits of peace' departing from her body.

Renowned as the “the national painter of Switzerland," he is famous for his realistic depictions of everyday life in nineteenth century Switzerland. Anker studied at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Anker painted many of his works in a studio in his parents' attic. He frequently travelled to Italy and other European countries.
