It takes only a few tools for the next few hours. A roundawl a diamond shaped awl and two saddler needles. Ok thread and a scissor as well. While the diamond/sword shaped awl cuts through the leather, the round one is meant only for backstitching. It will not damage the thread. Since you basically are blind on the left / backhand you need to feel the tip of the awl and follow it with the second needle. Saddlers needles have a blunt tip - luckily! Many times even without a pointed tip they pierce into the fingers.
