Okay, I know I probably sound dumb, but could someone please explain to me how sworn shields serving as one's bodyguard manage to get any sleep? Aren't they supposed to keep constant watch over the one they protect? I genuinely don't understand.

Like, in the show, we see that Criston Cole guards Rhaenyra's chambers (?) when she returns from the walk with Daemon, and it's nighttime, right? And before that, we see Cole being by her side during the hunt, daytime?

Maybe it was briefly explained in the books (I know it sounds dumb, again :)). Maybe someone has this very specific knowledge about real history? I have no idea why this bothers me so much, I just need to know.

Hello, I’m the one who asked about the whole Corbyn vs Johnson fiasco. General question, what duties as a household guard (aside from the obvious) would perform if say he was a sworn shield or am I being a dummy? Because are they different jobs or the same job entirely? Thanks.

Well, depending on the fief, someone hired as a household guard would do more than bodyguard the lord or their assigned protectee. They could patrol the lands which might be everything from enforcing a curfew to helping escort the taxes back to the keep. They could also help out with instructing squires and pages and of course, in the event of war, contribute to an attack or defense. If the lord or the marshal needed something, the guard might be able to do it.

Lerisa’s knuckles were white from holding onto the side of the ship too tight. She hated sailing, it made her sicker than a dog. She wrapped her thin cloak around herself in the hopes of being slightly warmer.

She would’ve gone back below deck but well... she was too prideful. The bard hired by the Nobleman Lerisa recognized instantly. They had previous work and... they hadn’t got off on the best foot. But Lerisa didn’t care, gold was gold, maybe she’d start saving it up, buy a small house somewhere instead of wasting it in taverns.

Her hand instinctively reached for the hilt of her sword when she heard footsteps behind her.
