GEM: Gem had called his family together.
He had told them it was urgent and he knew that they knew that he had made another mistake. That they were expecting the worst. Didn’t even need to see it on their long, drawn faces, which he felt more familiar with than their smiles.
As soon as they arrived, Gem wanted to apologize to each and every one of them.
Instead, he let Snow do most of the greeting, as the tension filled the room like a storm cloud.
They’d come to All Summer. There were still packages strewn about the place, but it was big enough to hold everyone comfortably. It was much bigger than his childhood home. He should be proud of his house, his soon-to-be-except-not-anymore wife, and this life that he had clawed back from the edge. That he’d rebuilt, piece by piece and splinter by splinter.
But he wasn’t proud.
All he felt was shame.
Eventually, the last person arrived. Snow finished making tea. Enough for everyone to have a cup. Gem went around and poured one for each person, except the kids, who were thankfully not old enough to understand what was going on—but were instead sleeping (Nadia’s baby) or playing quietly with some toys that Snow and Gem had bought for a much happier dream (Sienna).
Gem stayed standing. He couldn’t sit, even if it meant he towered over everyone else in the room—except his father, who was also standing, leaning against the entry of the room closest to the front door, like he was planning to escape out the front, Gem out the back.
“Thank you for coming on such short notice,” Gem said, squinting a little against the setting sun reflecting off the lake, which could just be seen through the scattered trees. He glanced at Snow, looking for reassurance and also—because he didn’t want to look at his family.
