Here are some SXF anime decisions that might matter. Or maybe I am just overthinking everything that the anime team do
I want to focus on Anya, because there is a lot to unpack when it comes to the anime and manga differences around her.
This one might not be huge, but it caught my attention. The anime changes the timeline for when Anya’s nameplate gets put on her bedroom door.
In the manga, a short chapter shows that the nameplate appears after Yor has already joined the Forger family. It is even implied that Yor carved it herself, since Anya could not write well yet and letting a six year old carve wood with something sharp would not be a great idea.
And Loid corrects her right away when he notices the misspelling. The manga does not show how long it takes them to replace the nameplate, but it is clear it did not take long.
In the anime, though, Anya’s nameplate is already on her door in Episode 3, when Yor is only just being welcomed into the family.
So it definitely was not Yor who carved it. The anime version isn’t even wood. It looks like metal or some other material. Which raises the question: who made it?
My first guess would be Anya, since that is how she thought her name was spelled. But the plate looks too clean and polished. It feels like an adult made it. If it were Loid, though, he already knew her name was spelled ANYA because that is what the records from Franky said. So it should not have been him. And if he ordered a custom plate from someone else, it would still be strange for it to come out as ANIA instead of ANYA.
So I am not sure if this was an honest mistake in the anime that they might fix when they adapt the short chapter, assuming they ever do. But if it was intentional, then there has to be some kind of reason behind it.
What makes it even more odd is that in the anime the nameplate stays on her door for a while, even after she becomes an Eden student. If it were misspelled, Loid would have noticed and replaced it right away, knowing how meticulous he is.
If anyone has thoughts about this, I would love to hear them. This difference has been stuck in my mind since the moment I caught it.
We all know spelling is not Anya’s strong suit. But I noticed a small difference between the anime and the manga in this specific moment.
"That’s spelled with an A, not E."
That is what Loid says in the manga. But in the anime, his line is reversed. I am pretty sure he is still talking about spelling in the anime too, since the Netflix subtitles point in that direction. And it would be odd for a multiple choice test to go all the way up to the letter E. So I think the Muse Asia English subtitles might be a bit off. Anyone who speaks Japanese, feel free to confirm.
In the anime, the line becomes:
The line is reversed in the anime, and the way Loid says he has taught her this many times suggests that Anya struggles to tell those two letters apart. A and E. She might mix them up more than any other pair.
Why does that matter? Because her name has two As!
What if it was not even ANIA? What if it was ENIA, ENIE, or ANIE?
That idea pushed me to rewatch Episode 1, especially the scene with the scientist, just to hear how they pronounce her name. And of course they say “Anya.” I almost dropped the theory, until I remembered Anya’s habit of hearing things wrong. Like when she misheard Yuri calling her something that turned into “swole chihuahua,” or how she keeps saying odekeke instead of odekake. She swaps A and E a lot.
The scene with the scientist calling her name is shown from her perspective, and she was younger then. What if she misheard her own name?
If her name was misheard, it would help explain why the scientists have never found her. They are not looking for an Anya. Sigmund does not call her Anya either. When he recognizes her in the recent chapter, he calls her 007.
And if it really was ENIA instead of ANIA, maybe it was not an Ostanian name at all. Maybe it came from Covenia. Authen worked as a scientist there. Anya could have been Covenia Test Subject 007, called something like ENIA 007.
Now imagine if she really was nameless, like Bond, and Loid ended up giving her a name without knowing it, the same way a parent names their child. The angst potential is unreal.
Anyway, let me know what you think.
