SXSW Food Lovers' Guide - Break Away
SXSW is fun, so much fun. It's full of opportunity, learning, networking, parties, libations, and more libations. But sometimes you want a break from the crowds and mayhem to regain your SXSW mojo and explore Austin a bit more. And if I were you, these would top my itinerary.
All of these locations are conveniently mapped on the SXSW Food Lovers’ Guide Pinterest board.

Have a ramen experience. All the rage in other cities, ramen has only just recently found its place in the Austin food scene. At the heart of this growing infatuation with slurpy noodles is Ramen Tatsu-Ya, a trailer turned brick and mortar (now with two locations) that almost always sports a line. The good news is the line moves right along and at the end is a bowl of warm, smooth, noodly perfection. The flavor is rich and the pork perfectly braised. For the full experience add a couple of bombs to your bowl (my favorites are buttery corn and spicy) and some yodas (brussels sprouts) and edamame on the side.
Have an an intimate dinner. Tucked away in a renovated house, a visit to Lenoir always makes me think that I've been lucky enough to be invited to the home of owners Todd Duplechan and Jessica Maher. The menu changes weekly to take into account seasonality and Todd's imagination. For $40 for a 3-course menu it's one of the best dining deals in town. If you get a chance, stop into Metier, their kitchen goods store next door. Offering an eclectic collection of cookware, cookbooks, bar goods, and dish ware curated by Jessica it's full of great finds. I bet you don't leave empty handed.
Go on a food adventure. Tucked away just a bit north of campus, Foreign & Domestic is a cozy space with a menu that is unexpected and promises you an unforgettable dinner. Chef Ned Elliot takes familiar flavor combinations like ham, cornbread, and tomatoes or lamb and root vegetables and turns them into creations like Speck Ham & Warm Cornbread w Tomato Jam and Black Hills Meat Lamb Loin with Brussels, Parsnip, Pear, Black Garlic Catsup. You can't get a reservation but it's well worth the time investment. Take a few friends along and sit on the patio while you wait.
Have breakfast any time of day. Hangover or not, sometimes you just want breakfast. And when a waffle as big as your head or Eggs Benedict on biscuits instead of an English muffin will just hit the spot, 24 Diner just outside of downtown is the place to be. While "Diner" is in their name, they aren't your typical greasy spoon. Sourcing fresh ingredients from all over town, they offer breakfast 24 hours a day (as their name implies) but they also have a sandwiches, one of the best burgers in town (make plans for a nap afterwards), fresh vegetables and salads, and corn fritters that I may have eaten a whole plate of more than once.
