For the "unrecommend a book" ask: Don't read The Last Empress by Hannah Pakula (a biography of Chiang Kai-shek's wife Soong Mei-ling). I enjoy historical biographies and have an interest in Chinese history, so this seemed like a good pick when I got it at a used bookstore a couple months ago. Got through about 60 pages of it before giving up. Author treats the reader like they've never heard of China before and overexplains the idea of everything from "there was an emperor they thought he was like a god" to Chinese characters to "the family name comes first when writing Chinese names." It's written through this weird honestly kind of Orientalist lens. I'm not Chinese but I feel like if I was Chinese I'd be even more annoyed. If someone is picking up this book... they probably know what they're getting into!! It's a biography of a specific historical figure! So why write it this way, seemingly trying to cater to a hypothetical American-everyman (and not even doing it well)? sorry for just using this prompt as an excuse to complain about a book you never planned on reading anyway lol

Now this is hard bc I don't generally get scared by media in general...maybe Thirteen Storeys by Jonathan Sims (although, generally speaking, I found tma to be much scarier), or maybe something from Valuable Humans In Transit by QNTM (The Difference or Google People spring first to mind)

19. Do you prefer long or short books?

Depends on the story, the writing style, the characters, etc etc...but, generally, I prefer longer books over shorter ones 🙂‍↕️

every day! the only exception is when I used to get new socks, then I'd wear them as a pair fresh out the pack for the first time, but I haven't bought myself new socks in probably a decade or so and no one buys me socks as presents anymore. so, yeah, I've worn odd socks every single day for the past ten years at least :)

a polearm is clearly more useful for addressing a reach disadvantage than a dagger. play nice or have several inches of iron plunged between the gap in the plates like it's trying to pry your shoulder joint from the socket dribbling blood until it seeps through those ugly colors of your surcoat. hoping you retain the presence of mind to understand it'll be even worse when it comes back out ofc
