Gritty knocks from Ashwin and Vihari give India a draw.
Not every day we see a test match continue till the 5th day but India somehow managed to get through to the final day. India had a mountain to climb on Day 5 as they needed more than 300 runs to score. The play started early at 4:30 IST. The captain Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed in the second over of the play as Nathan Lyon managed to get his inside edge to forward short leg. The millions of fans around the world lost their hope, but what was about to happen made history.
After Rahane departed, Rishabh Pant was promoted up instead of Vihari to join hands with Pujara and they managed to not let the hopes die. Pant was scratchy at the start but once he found his mojo, he started to take on the Aussie bowlers with an aggressive approach and scored some quick runs. Pujara on the other side played as he is used to playing. This pair made a brilliant hundred run partnership with Pant taking on Lyon for the most liking hitting him for sixes and fours at will. Rishabh once again tried to take on Lyon but this time the bowler had the last laugh as he varied his pace brilliantly and Pant went for a rash shot only to find an outside edge to Cummins at gully.
In came Vihari, who was under immense pressure to score, given he didn't have many runs in his bag. He had to prove that he was suitable for the middle-order role. But the Aussies never let him settle and he once again found himself under pressure. Then a jaffa from Hazelwood bowled Pujara who looked great for most of the time he spent in the crease. During the course of this partnership, Vihari pulled his hamstring and wasn't able to run properly, and started to limp. The wicket of Pujara once again opened the gates for Australia as India had a long tail.
Ashwin then joined hands with Vihari to stitch an unbeatable partnership which comprised of 258 balls wherein they faced a lot of bouncers and some smart bowling from the bowlers who bowled in some great line and length. This pair decided not to score more as Vihari would not be able to run, they aimed for a draw. But they had more than around a session of play left and the bowlers toiling hard to take a wicket. the draw seemed pretty impossible. This duo was determined enough to face the heat from the bowlers and take India to stumps as the match ended in the draw. The highlight of this partnership was that they even had many body blows but still managed not to play loose shots or give any edges. Not many chances were created to take wickets, but some sloppy fielding from Australia ensured that no more wicket falls and the match ends in a draw.
India next move to Brisbane for the final test which is scheduled to start on the 15th of January. India previously had some issues to go to Brisbane regarding the quarantine period they had to spent when they returned back, but now after they have been given some guarantees in writing and seem to be satisfied.
