Often, we have entrenched views when we are going into meetings or conversations. Recently, I met with a client who had made up his mind about taking a promotion. Bottom line up front, he decided, for a number of reasons, not to take it. During our discussions my client highlighted his concern for the conversation he needed to have about his decision with his boss. He had firmly made up his mind and was adamant he wouldn't change it. It was then that I challenged him with the following question: "What would need to happen to change your mind? After some resistance, my client managed to come up with some ideas that could potentially sway his position on the matter. The outcome was that my client had now been moved from his entrenched position and was now prepared to be more open about the conversation with his boss.
