Context: Nina Hayes is loosely inspired by Sylvia Elizabeth Mathis, the FBI’s first Black female Special Agent. While this story is a work of fiction and I’ve taken some liberties with dates and details, it was important to me to honor the truth that Sylvia was the first—the original trailblazer. In this world, Nina proudly stands as the second, following the path Sylvia helped carve.
