Represented by a lively, cheerful looking little man wearing a hat, this measure was initiated as a way of informing pedestrians back in the socialist republic whether or not if it was safe to cross the road. The first of Karl Peglau's designs were installed in the year 1960 in East Berlin's grandest boulevard, Unter den Linden.
