At first, Dogma hadn't been sure what to think of you.
He had read your file late at night, after you were introduced as a new addition to the forces of the 501st and well…
He had to admit it was impressive. You had cycled through numerous battalions before, going wherever you were needed the most. Most interesting for him where the mortality rates under your command; they were always low. Well, as low as the war allowed.
You were competent in the field. And the more he worked alongside you, the more he found an appreciation for the way you didn't seem to want to break every rule like General Skywalker did.
Of course, Dogma would never question the orders of his superior but that didn't mean the lack of any adherence to regulations always left him a bit unbalanced so for you to do things properly — it calmed his mind.
And there was another thing he had noticed; your care for his brothers.
-------------------
It had been a brutal battle, leaving Dogma covered in sweat under his armour and soot all over the white and blue plastoid. There were streaks of red that he desperately tried to ignore as the moans of his wounded brothers echoed in the aftermath.
Medics were hurrying between them, trying to decided who to tend to first and who was beyond saving.
Dogma was trying to help, moving injured clones towards the medical tents erected at the edge of the plains, when he spotted you.
You weren't standing off to the side or had disappeared entirely. No, you were right beside his brothers, putting pressure on wounds and mumbling encouragements under your breath.
He was sure the Force was involved somehow too, especially when people he knew never relaxed, finally did.
Dogma noticed a cut on your forehead when he looked closer, and you were clearly favouring your left side, but you didn't let up, even as the medics tried to tend to you first.
"No, he needs it more," you said, hands covered in blood as you pressed them to the space between the pauldron and the chestplate of a trooper.
Dogma had later found out the clone had made it, thanks to your help, and it instilled a deep respect for you in him.
-------------------
But it was rare the two of you ever interacted. Dogma could only recall two situations were you had talked to him in a context other than simple orders.
Once, you had checked over him when he had been hurt during a battle. It wasn't anything serious, but when you had crouched down in front of him, placing a hand on his arm, he had felt a calmness spread through him.
At first, it had only made him more agitated. He needed to be sharp for the inevitable next battle, but later, after talking to Tup, he was grateful. Dogma didn't think it a curse that his mind never seemed to slow down — though it often let him overthinking.
And whatever you had done — some Force things he couldn't even begin to comprehend — had left him peaceful in a way he rarely experienced.
The other time had been during a strategy meeting. Usually, Dogma did not interfere with those but after ideas had stagnated, he had stepped forwards, offering his own input.
His nerves had been shot when he did, feeling the eyes of everyone on him. Dogma had caught your gaze then, a smile tugging at your lips and you nodded, encouraging him to go on.
It had given him the courage to lay out what he had noticed and it had given you the right incentive to come up with a genius idea that had won them the battle.
Afterwards, you had come up to him and praised him for his idea, leaving him even more stunned. Dogma was aware he wasn't the most popular among his brothers, much less any natborns so this…
-------------------
You hadn't left his mind since you joined their battalion — not truly. And somehow you seemed to occupy more and more of his thoughts every day.
That wasn't the worst thing about it though. The worst part was the weird feelings he was getting whenever he was near you.
He had felt it first after your praise — a pressure in his gut and a heat spreading through his body. His hands were clammy under his gloves and his eyes tracked your reactions nervously each time.
Had he… developed a crush?
Dogma wasn't stupid, he knew what feelings were — no matter what some of his brothers, like Fives, liked to say. He had heard them ranting, laughing and crying all about it.
And well… he had chastised them every time.
Developing feelings and trying to get close to your CO was against regulations.
The relationship was to be strictly professional, orders had to be followed without any emotional interference.
A crush could prohibit that, could make them look out and be more protective towards their desired person. Could inhibit their focus. Could—
"Hey, you okay there?"
Tup's voice snapped him out of his thoughts and Dogma shook his head to rid himself of the spiral.
"Yeah, all good, just thinking."
Tup's raised eyebrow told him that he didn't believe a single word. Sometimes Dogma missed when he was still a very gullible cadet.
Where had the innocence gone to?
Dogma sighed, pushing away from where he had been sitting. "It's nothing important." The lie tasted bitter on his tongue. "It'll pass soon, I think I'm just a bit tired."
Tup gave him another look but he didn't say anything and let Dogma pass. And just as Dogma was about to make his way towards the barracks, the door opened.
It was you.
Dogma's breath caught as you smiled at him and his whole body tensed. He wanted to go over to you, listen to you voice and—
No.
He couldn't.
It was against regulations.
Dogma forcefully turned away and left. He would ignore it until the feelings inevitably dissipated.
They had to.
-------------------
It was harder than he thought. Dogma would never admit it out loud but he now understood why his brothers had suffered so much.
It was already hard to avoid you when you were confined to one ship. It might have been a venator but somehow, you always managed to stumble into seemingly every room he went to.
And each time you would smile, that adorable expression where your eyes crinkled in the corner and some of the tension from the war seemed to lift from your mind. He could hear the greeting on your soft lips when you opened your mouth but…
Dogma turned away every time.
Your smile fell, your gaze landing on the floor. Your shoulders dropped.
Dogma's heart broke.
He pretended it didn't hurt.
But it did. It hurt more than the thought of going against regulations. It was him who was breaking the rules, you shouldn't be feeling the consequences of his actions.
It was his fault, everything was his fault.
And as the weeks passed, his feelings and thoughts seemed to revolved around you more and more.
Dogma wanted to curl up in a corner and cry.
-------------------
"Are you okay, trooper?"
You had found Dogma sitting in a corner on the ground behind some crates, his whole body shaking. The clone had abruptly excused himself from a briefing when you had joined and you went to look for him as soon as it ended.
His odd behaviour over the last few weeks had caught your attention because even if he had never been open like Fives or sensible like Tup, he had also never ran from social contacts.
Something was wrong — you could feel it in the Force — and you intended to find out what. Because no matter what your code said, Dogma, with his slightly awkward ways, had caught your heart.
"Hey, Dogma," you tried again when no answer came form him. "Are you hurt? Do you need a medic?"
No reply, only a frantic shaking of his head as he wrung his hands together.
"S—sorry. 'm so sorry." He kept mumbling over and over again, the sound jarring through the modulator of his helmet.
His body shook even more and you placed a hand on his shoulder, before finding the clasps of his helmet and pulling it off.
Dogma didn't meet your eyes right away but you could see the tears running down his cheeks. When he finally looked up, his eyes were bloodshot and the apologies kept falling from his lips.
"What are you sorry for?" You asked, sitting down on the floor and trying to seem as non-threatening as possible.
"I can't— I— It's against the regulations. It's—"
"Breathe," you interjected, slowly guiding him until some of the panic seemed to ease. "It's okay. I won't let you get punished for it, whatever it is. It will stay a secret."
For a few moments, Dogma seemed to think, thoughts warring inside his head before he reached a decision. "Promise?"
"I promise," you smiled slightly.
"I uh—" He stopped again, thought this time the reason appeared to be different as heat crept up his neck and stained his cheeks. "Ihaveacrushonyoupleasedon'treportit"
He clamped his mouth shut audibly and stared at you with wide eyes that you liked to describe as those of a puppy.
"Dogma I…" A blush of your own spread through your body and you were sure you both sported the same shade of red. "It's okay, first of all. You're okay."
Dogma finally relaxed.
"And… I feel the same way," you admitted.
"Really?"
"Yes."
"So… what now?" He asked, hope radiating from him through the Force.
"Now, we take it slow and try to make something of this."
