Switches and Dials

So I was reading this book with a genderfluid main character, and they gave what's probably the best explanation of it that I've seen referring to gender in general: "Sometimes it's not a switch, it's a dial. And it's not even a dial you can get your hands on; it turns without your permission or approval."

And I just stopped reading for a second.

How did this cis straight guy get it so perfectly?

There are times when my dial is being twisted around in circles, when it's stuck in place, when it's going from boy to girl to neither to both in seconds, when I get so frustrated I just want to rip the damned thing off hoping there's a switch underneath, that maybe I could be happier, less dysphoric, more me if I was just nonbinary or genderqueer or cis or trans instead of what I am.

But it's never worked.

btw, the book is Symptoms of Being Human by Jeff Garvin. Definitely recommend.
