Yemaya was originally a river goddess of the Yoruba in Nigeria. She went with her people traveling with them to distant new lands accompanying them in their hearts on the slave ships. In the new world she had new names such as Star of the Sea (Stella Maris), Virgin Mary ( Our lady of the Immaculate Conception) in Jamaica she became known as the River Mumma, a Jamaican folktale about a fresh water mermaid, it said she is the protector of all waterways, rivers and streams and the fishes are her children.
