The Syntagm - 5
Work on editing film on my Macbook used Adobe Premiere Pro
Jacques working on the Synapse animation.
The Syntagm - Audio analysis
Jacques was the one who in charge of doing audio/sound. Most of our film we used the audio/sound that recorded when we were filming our footage. There were some music audio that were used in some parts of the film to create the feelings to the film. For example Jacques used a slow beats audio in a city part to create the relax feeling in the city. The key sound of someone were cycling the bike were used as a symbol of transition when travelling between parts of memory.
The 'ticking' sound of the cycling bike also created the image of the clock's hand's ticking. It also gives the feeling of time is ticking away. Because the sound of cycling bike is quite a fast ticking sound, it means the time went fast too while we tried to travelling from a part of a memory to another part. This sound also used at the end part of the film, which is the scene when the past memories poped up when the character saw the beach. It brings back the memories that makes this person an Aqua-phobia patient. Again the 'ticking' sound of the bike were used to creates the feeling of this scene is related to the past memories.
The sound on the synapse scene gives the feeling of 'nervous'. If on the synapse shot doesn't have to sound effect in it, the audience won't be feeling anything though that shot suppose to create the feeling of nervous when the character remembered the past memories of drowning. In conclusion sound/audio helps the feeling in the film goes smoothly.
The Syntagm - 7
This is our poster for the AVERSION film. Amos designed and Jacques edited it. Originally it was suppose to be my job doing the poster, but I was busy with editing the film so this role goes to Amos. He has done a very good job on designing the poster, I really like it.
Amos and Jacques used Illustrator to create this poster. They were very cool because I wouldn't be able to use Illustrator to create it. I found Photoshop is easier for me than using Illustrator. But I would love to learn how to use the Illustrator if someone teach me.
The Syntagm - 8
Today we have done our film presentation and screening. The screening day was quite success because I can see that others were impressing with our film too. I also quite impressed with other groups film. I'm so proud of our group work, it was so worth of our time when we were doing this project. We were having quite hard time at the beginning when we got this project, but today I felt relieve when I see our work on the screening and people likes it.
Because we finished our film quite fast, so I was helping other groups with some of their work and I'm happy that they can finish in time too. I also feel happy that because of this project and my editing role, that is why I can use the skills that I have learnt from this project to help others.
The Syntagm - 3 Images
This is the key shot of the our 'Aversion' film. This scene was the scene of someone was cycling a bike. It is a high angle shot, from a rider P.O.V looking down. We used the bike to represent us travelling in the memories route. This shot creates the feeling of us, audience, are the one who rides on the bike through the memories of a patient that has a phobia. It feels like we were the one who explore the memories. As the audience can see that there are some repetitions of this cycling scene for transition of one scene to another in some part of the film. The transition shows that as we rides into the memories, sometime we might get lost in the memories so we have to change the route of the memories. Why do we have to use a bike as a symbol of travelling in the memories? Well I don't know either, There was no meaning in it in the first place, that is what I think. I didn't ask others about the meaning inside this scene too. I thought that we just want something to create the feeling of travelling into the memories. So we came across this cycling footage that Jacques has recorded it and I just edited it in our film.
This is a 2nd image from a shot in the film. As you can see, there are 2 layers of the footage and I used the Overlay option to combine 2 footage together. The first footage was underwater shot and from that shot we can see the bottom of the yellow boat under the water. The 2nd shot was from the lens footage. We used the DSLR camera lens and placed it infront of the HD digital camera and film it through DSLR lens. So we can see inside of the DSLR lens too. By combined (Overlay) 2 footage together can gives the abstract feeling when we watch the film. If I take out the lens footage it might look as we were just film underwater normally, but if we combined the lens footage too it looks as we were looking from underwater. We want to create the feeling of someone was drowning and we, as the one who rides into this person's memory, are seeing this person drowning through this person eyes (lens). This lens' the symbol of an eyes and that we were looking through inside the eyes.
This the shot of the 3D Synapse scene that Jacques made for this film. It is a short animation that clearly gives us the feeling of travelling inside a memory. The white light thing was moving through the lines (I guess it is some kind of lines that blood cells travelling inside us). The white light thing is represents us travelling through the memory lines. At first we didn't put this shot in the beginning of the film because we didn't want the audience to know right away that we were exploring through someone else's memory. We put this shot at nearly the end of the film to give the hint to the audience. As the film nearly end the Synapse shot becomes more clearer to make the audience understand the concept of the film. As we can see at the end of the film there was a scene of the Synapse shot and it is a track shot that following the white light. This clearly shows that we are the one who travelling in the memory. You can see that we were giving many hints in the film already, through the shots and editing.
The Syntagm - Critique of role in production
My roles in production originally were editing, location scout, making poster, compositor and cinematographer. But as time goes I was too busy on editing film so I don't really have time on making poster, so Amos had responsible on this role instead. Though after I finished my editing job, I help on designed the back cover of the DVD case.
I really like the Editing role because I get to use different programs on the Macbook. I like doing works on computer. Though it takes a bit of time to learn how to use new programs, but I really enjoy it. When I enjoy something I'll learn how to do it faster than what I don't really enjoy. I couldn't do much on Location scout, because I don't really know the place around Auckland that much. So I don't think this is a good role for me. I can just suggest to our group that they could film in my parents' restaurant. For Cinematographer, I got a background with photography before because I took photography subject when I was in high school. But filming is different from taking photograph. I have learnt many new stuff on being a cinematographer and I really interested in it. I wish I could do filming more because I was so keen on doing this role. I think Compositor is quite similar with editing role, I really enjoy this role too.
Because I know how to use Photoshop so I got the role for Poster design originally, but Amos had done a good job on Illustrator which I don't know how to use that software. Also thanks to Jacques, he helps a lot with Illustrator. Though I think the Sound design role looks hard and complicated and I don't really want to do that role. but I still want to explore on that role a bit. Jacques had done a very good job on that role. Another role that I don't really want to do is Producer because being producer has to make others get on track. But I think I couldn't really do that role yet because I don't have enough experience on filming industry so I couldn't really making others to keep on track.
